Winter Universiade Team Canada roundup & results

ERZURUM, Turkey (CIS) – Canadian athletes continued competition in alpine skiing and biathlon on Friday at the 25th Winter Universiade, while the reigning champion women’s hockey team qualified for the gold-medal final thanks to a dominating semifinal win over the United States.

In women’s hockey, Canada (6-0) will face Finland (5-0-1) in Saturday’s title match at 1 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET) after downing the USA (2-4) 8-1. Université de Moncton forward Mariève Provost of Laval, Que., led the way with two goals and an assist. See separate game recap for women’s hockey.
 
The Finns beat Slovakia 5-1 in the other semifinal. Canada needed a shootout session to defeat Finland 2-1 when the two teams met in their preliminary round opener on Jan. 27.
 
Canada captured gold in 2009 when women’s hockey made its Universiade debut in Harbin, China.

In alpine skiing, Olivier Lacaille, a University of Montreal student from Montreal, was the top Canadian in the men’s giant slalom finishing in 12th position thanks to a time of 1:55.21. Fellow Montreal native Simon Mannella (1:56.92) of Laval University also cracked the Top 30 with a 28th-place finish.
 
Bernhard Graf of Austria won the race in 1:52.04.
 
In the biathlon mixed relay (2x6km + 2x7.5km), the Canadian foursome of Kathryn Stone of Grand Prairie, Alta., Jennifer Paterson of St. Albert, Alta., Johnny Forward of Corner Brook, Nfld., and Jon Skinstad of Camrose, Alta., was the eighth team to cross the finish line in 1:44.12.
 
The gold medal went to the Ukraine (1:24:58).
