Winter Universiade: Team Canada roundup & results
ERZURUM, Turkey (CIS) – Canada resumed round-robin action
in hockey and curling on Monday at the 25th Winter Universiade,
while the Canadian cross country skiers took part in the individual
pursuit events.

In women’s hockey, three players scored a pair of goals and Brock University netminder Beth Clause of Hamilton earned the shutout as Canada improved to 4-0 in the preliminary with a 9-0 domination of the United States. With one round-robin game remaining, the Canadians top the standings and have long secured a spot in the semifinals. See separate game recap for women’s hockey.
In men’s hockey, Carleton University forward Brandon MacLean of Burlington, Ont., scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period on the power play to help the red-and-white to a 3-2 win over the Koreans. University of Waterloo forward Chris Ray of Kelowna, B.C., netted the first two goals for the Canadians, who outshot their rivals 61-16 in the contest. Canada ends round-robin play with two wins and a shootout loss and is qualified for Thursday’s quarter-finals. See separate game recap for men’s hockey.
In women’s curling, the Canadian rink from the University of Regina suffered a heart-breaking loss to South Korea in the tenth end. The Koreans scored three points in the final end to steal an 8-7 decision, which drops the Canadian record to 3-3 with two games remaining in the preliminary stage.
In men’s curling, the rink from Queen’s University split a doubleheader on Monday losing 8-4 to Sweden before crushing the Slovenians 13-1 in seven ends. Canada is now 3-2 with three round-robin matches left.
In cross country skiing, Laval University’s Alexia Pichard-Jolicoeur of St-Ferréol-les-Neiges, Que., was the top Canadian in the women’s 10km classic/free pursuit finishing in 33rd place thanks to a time of 36:28.7.
In the men’s 15km classic/free pursuit, Carleton University’s Colin Abbott of Whitehorse, Yukon, led the way with a time of 48:39.9, good for 36th position.
The alpine skiing competition was halted on day five of the Universiade due to poor weather conditions.
