Winter Universiade Team Canada roundup: McFarlane reaches short track final
ERZURUM, Turkey (CIS) – No Canadians were able to reach
the podium on Friday as the first finals of the 25th Winter
Universiade were contested in short track speed skating and cross
country skiing.

Speed skater Liam McFarlane of Medicine Hat, Alta., recorded the
best individual performance of the day for Team Canada reaching the
1500-metre short track final, where he finished fifth out of six
contenders with a time of 2:24.792.
The podium was swept by the Korean trio of gold medallist Hwan Ee
Kim (2:24.046), Tae Hoon Kim (2:24.169) and Seoung II Kim
(2:24.419). Maxime Chataignier of France (2:24.643) was fourth,
while China’s Baoku Sui (2:25.593) was sixth.
Prior to the final, McFarlane, a University of Calgary student, had
won his heat in the preliminary round and qualified for the medal
race by taking second place behind Seoung Kim in his semifinal.
Pier-Olivier Gagnon of Quebec City also reached the semifinal round
but his day ended when he finished fourth in his race.
Gabriel Chiasson-Poirier of Sherbrooke, Que., and Vincent Cournoyer
of Boucherville, Que., did not advance past the heats.
In the women’s 1500m, Gabrielle Waddell of Red Deer, Alta.,
Sabrina Bourgela of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Que., and Andréa
Do-Duc of Montreal all reached the semifinals, but none was able to
qualify for the title race. Kristy Shoebridge of Calgary was
eliminated in the preliminaries.
While the Canadians enjoyed limited individual success on the first
day of the short track competition, it was another story in the
relays.
Both red-and-white foursomes won their preliminary heat and easily
qualified for Saturday’s semifinals, on 3000m for the women
and 5000m for the men.
The women’s relay of Do-Duc, Shoebridge, Waddell and
Valérie Lambert of Montreal advanced with a time of
4:24.448, while the men’s team of Poirier, Cournoyer and
Allyn and Pier-Olivier Gagnon qualified with a time of
6:59.057.
In cross country skiing, it was a rough first day at the office for
Canadian student-athletes.
In the women’s five-kilometre classic race, Zoe Roy of
Bracebridge, Ont., was Canada’s top finisher in a time of
16:47.9, good for 33rd place. Alexia Pichard-Jolicoeur (17:26.1) of
St-Féréol-les-Neiges, Que., was 39th, Adele Lay
(18:19.3) of Eden Mills, Ont., was one spot behind in 40th place,
while Mary Thompson (18:29.2) of Woodstock, Ont., and Maja
Zimmerman (18:41.6) of Edmonton finished 42nd and 44th,
respectively.
In the men’s 10m classic, Jesse Heckrodt of Enderby, B.C.,
crossed the finish line in 33rd place thanks to a time of 28:47.7.
Benjamin Hébert (30:12.2) of Montreal was 48th, Colin Abbott
(30:21.6) of Whitehorse was 49th, Anthony Killick (31:17.9) of Fort
McMurray, Alta., was 51st, while Vincent Ruel of Charny, Que., did
not finish.
The curling competition also got under way on Friday with the
Canadian men defeating Great Britain 7-4 in their lone match of the
day, while Canada got off to a surprising 0-2 start on the
women’s side, losing 8-4 to Japan and 9-5 to Great
Britain.
The Canadian women claimed silver at the last Universiade in 2009
in Harbin, China, while the men finished sixth.
Led by skip Jonathan Beuk of Kingston, Ont., the Canadian men - and
reigning CIS champion from Queen’s University - were tied 1-1
with their British rivals after three ends but scored three in the
fourth and another in the sixth to build a comfortable 5-1 lead
they wouldn’t relinquish.
In its first duel, Canada’s women’s foursome led by
skip Brooklyn Lemon of the 2010 CIS champion University of Regina
was also tied 1-1 with Japan after four ends but saw its opponents
score two in both the fifth and the sixth to run away with the
win.
Canada got off to a better start in its second match building a
quick 2-0 lead in the first end and a 3-1 cushion after three, but
Great Britain scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in
the sixth to go in front by 5-3. The Canadians came back and tied
it at 5-5 after eight but saw their rivals scored two in each of
the last two ends to seal the victory.
In women’s hockey, Canada improved to 2-0 in round-robin play
with a 3-0 shutout over Slovakia (1-1). See separate game recap for
women’s hockey.
