July 8, 2011
OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Friday the student-athletes and coach who will represent Canada in table tennis at the 26th Summer Universiade in August in Shenzhen, China.
Heading the red and white squad will be coach and team leader En-Long Wang of Toronto. Born in Beijing, the former Canadian national team coach is one of three delegation members who will return to their native country next month.
On the women’s side, twin sisters Sara and Stephanie Yuen, who hail from Montreal and study at the University of Ottawa, will defend the Canadian colours at the world university games for the second time in four years. The siblings competed at the 2007 Universiade in Bangkok where they were both eliminated in the round of 64 in singles, paired to reach the round of 32 in women’s doubles and also competed in mixed doubles.
Sara is a former senior national champion in singles (2008) and
reached the women’s doubles finals at the Commonwealth
championships in both 2007 in India and 2009 in Scotland.
Stephanie competed at the world junior championships back in 2005
in Austria.
On the men’s side, the four-member squad is comprised of Todd Gregory of Charlottetown, Peng Guo, who was born in Beijing and now resides in Montreal, Pierre-Luc Hinse of Gatineau, Que., and Ling Kun Yang, a native of Zheng Zhou, China, who now lives in Laval, Que.
Gregory also wore the Maple Leaf at the Bangkok Universiade
where he reached the round of 64 in men’s singles and
doubles, and also competed in mixed doubles. The University of
Prince Edward Island student recently claimed the singles title at
the 2011 Atlantic championships.
Guo, who studies at École de technologie supérieure
(ETS) in Montreal, is a former junior national champion in singles
and doubles (2005) and under-21 national champion in singles
(2004). He has participated in three world junior
championships.
Hinse has a wealth of international experience including a bronze medal in team competition at the 2007 Pan American championships, a pair of Commonwealth Games appearances (2010, 2006), four appearances at world championships in various age groups, as well as a selection as an alternate player for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The University of Ottawa student claimed two medals at the 2011 National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) championships including silver in singles.
Yang, who attends Vanier College in Montreal, is a former under-18 national champion in singles, doubles and team competition. He captured bronze in men’s doubles at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games and is a veteran of two world junior championships and a pair of Commonwealth championships.
The table tennis competition in Shenzhen will run from Aug. 13-20. Canada is still looking for its first Universiade medal in the sport.
