OTTAWA (CIS) – There are new national leaders this week in
Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s hockey and women’s
track and field.
In men’s hockey, the Westerm Mustangs move up to No. 1 for
the first time since 2001-02, a campaign that ended with their lone
University Cup triumph. In women’s track and field, the
reigning CIS champion Windsor Lancers move up three positions to
top the national rankings for the first time this season.
In other CIS sports, Regina (women’s basketball), Carleton
(men’s basketball), Wilfrid Laurier (women’s hockey),
UBC (women’s swimming), Toronto (men’s swimming),
Windsor (men’s track and field), UBC (women’s
volleyball), Trinity Western (men’s volleyball), Brock
(women’s wrestling) and Concordia (men’s wrestling) all
maintain their No. 1 status.
In women’s basketball, the top-ranked Cougars (17-0) showed
over the weekend why they’ve been ranked No. 1 the entire
season as they swept a two-game series at home against No. 8
Alberta, 81-76 and 84-70. Regina, which has already secured first
place in Canada West’s Prairie Division, visits Lethbridge
(6-12) Friday and Saturday, before closing out conference play at
No. 3 Saskatchewan on Feb. 18.
In men’s hoops, Carleton easily improved to 18-0 in league
play with an 86-57 home win over Ottawa, last Friday. The Ravens,
who have long clinched first place in the OUA East, visit RMC
(0-18) and Queen’s (2-16) this weekend, and will then wrap up
the regular season at home against Toronto and Ryerson, on Feb.
17-18.
In women’s hockey, Laurier (23-0-1) captured the OUA regular
season title thanks to a 5-2 win over UOIT and a 7-0 shutout
against Queen’s. The Golden Hawks end league play this
weekend when they host Brock (11-12-1) and No. 6 Guelph
(18-5-1).
In men’s hockey, Western (21-2-3) move up two positions to
No. 1 thanks to a 5-1 victory over Waterloo and a 7-4 defeat of
Lakehead, combined to one loss apiece last week by UNB, which
remains at No. 2, and McGill, which drops to No. 3. The Mustangs,
who have secured top spot in the OUA West standings, complete their
regular schedule with tilts against UOIT (5-20-1) on Thursday and
York (12-10-4) on Saturday.
In women’s volleyball, UBC (17-1), which will finish first in
Canada West, swept a two-game set against Brandon last weekend, 3-0
and 3-0. The Thunderbirds face a nice challenge on Friday and
Saturday as they visit No. 5 Trinity Western (12-6) to conclude
conference play.
In men’s volleyball, Trinity Western (17-1) was impressive
last weekend in a pair of road wins over No. 7 Calgary, 3-0 and
3-1. The Spartans can claim the Canada West regular season crown at
home this weekend when they host No. 6 UBC (10-8) for a pair.
