CIS Top Ten Tuesday (#18): Five changes atop national rankings

OTTAWA (CIS) – Five teams made their way to the top of Canadian Interuniversity Sport national rankings this week.
 
UBC (women) and Toronto (men) are the new leaders in CIS swimming, Brock (women) and Concordia (men) top the new rankings in wrestling, while Guelph moves up to No. 1 in women’s track and field.
 
In other CIS sports, Regina (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), Wilfrid Laurier (women’s hockey), McGill (men’s hockey), Windsor (men’s track and field), UBC (women’s volleyball) and Trinity Western (men’s volleyball) all maintain their No. 1 status.
 
While changes were aplenty in individual sports, CIS leaders resumed their winning ways in team competition.
 
In women’s basketball, top-ranked Regina (15-0) remained the only undefeated team in the nation thanks to a pair of home wins against Winnipeg, 84-62 and 98-71. The Cougars, who have led all 10 national coaches’ polls so far in 2011-12, host No. 8 Alberta (11-5) on Friday and Saturday.
 
In men’s hoops, Carleton (17-0) is also the only undefeated squad in the nation and tops the CIS ranking for the 10th time in as many polls following a 90-48 domination of York and a 109-74 victory over Laurentian. The Ravens play only once this week, hosting cross-town rival Ottawa (11-6) on Friday.
 
In women’s hockey, Laurier improved to 21-0-1 in conference play over the weekend thanks to a 6-0 shutout against Waterloo and a 5-3 defeat of York. The Golden Hawks, who took over at No. 1 from McGill a week ago and are the only team in the country without a regulation loss so far this season, visit UOIT (9-13-0) on Thursday and No. 10 Queen’s (11-8-3) on Friday.
 
In men’s hockey, McGill (18-3-2) dominated Ottawa 7-2 last Friday but was upset 4-2 at Carleton the following night. Despite the loss, the Redmen hold on to the No. 1 position they took away last week from UNB. The OUA East leaders are back on the ice Tuesday night when they visit No. 10 UQTR (17-5-2) in Trois-Rivières, Que., and then host Concordia (12-10-2) and Carleton (13-9-3) this weekend in Montreal. 
 
In women’s volleyball, UBC (15-1) showed last weekend why they are the reigning four-time CIS champions as they swept a two-game series in Winnipeg against the No. 5 Wesmen, 3-1 and 3-1. The Thunderbirds, who lead the Top 10 for the 12th time in as many polls, host Brandon (8-8) on Friday and Saturday.
 
In men’s volleyball, Trinity Western (15-1) travelled to Winnipeg to face Manitoba (14-2) in a much-anticipated two-game set between the top two teams in the country. The doubleheader lived up to its billing, with No. 2 Manitoba prevailing in straight sets on Friday to hand TWU its first loss of the season, and the defending national champions rebounding the following night with a 3-0 win of their own. The Spartans, who have been ranked No. 1 since the start of the season (12 polls), visit No. 7 Calgary (9-7) for a pair this weekend.
