CIS Top Ten Tuesday (#21): SFU goes for 50th straight womens hoops win
OTTAWA (CIS) – Simon Fraser’s women’s
basketball team, one of many defending CIS champions holding on to
their No. 1 positions this week, is currently riding a 49-game
winning streak.
Women’s basketball
The reigning national champion Clan lead the Top 10 for the seventh
time in as many coaches’ polls this season following an 80-45
domination of Trinity Western (2-9) that improved their conference
record to a Canada West-leading 11-0. Simon Fraser, which has
racked up 49 straight wins since dropping its 2008-09 opener to
Victoria, hosts Winnipeg (7-6) and Manitoba (5-8) this weekend.
Also of note this week in CIS women’s basketball, the
defending OUA champion Windsor Lancers (11-1) drop from No. 2 to
No. 3 behind Regina (10-2) after a 66-50 upset loss to McMaster
(8-4) on Saturday.
Men’s basketball
Last year’s CIS finalists, the UBC Thunderbirds are 11-0 in
conference play following a two-game sweep of Fraser Valley (6-6),
97-63 and 91-78. The T-Birds, who top the national rankings for a
third straight week, hit the road this weekend for duels against
Lethbridge (6-7) and No. 5 Calgary (10-3).
Women’s hockey
The two-time defending national champion McGill Martlets defeated
Ottawa (4-8-1) 4-2 on Sunday to improve to 13-0 in QSSF play and
extend their record streak to 73 straight wins against CIS
opponents, dating back to December of 2007. The Martlets, who have
led all 12 coaches’ polls this season, put their streak on
the line on Friday night when they host No. 10 Montreal
(10-3-1).
Also of note in CIS women’s hockey, Saskatchewan (10-3-3)
moves up two spots to No. 8 following a two-game sweep of Manitoba
(12-4), which drops a pair to No. 6.
Men’s hockey
The reigning University Cup champion UNB Varsity Reds improved to
19-0 in conference play with a pair of key road wins over Top-10
opponents including a 6-1 domination No. 9 Saint Mary’s
(10-5-4) and a 2-1 win over No. 4 Acadia (13-4-1). The V-Reds, who
have topped all 10 media polls thus far this season, face the
University of Maine in non-conference action on Tuesday evening in
Orono, ME, before resuming AUS play at Moncton (4-13-1) on Friday
and at St. Thomas (6-10-2) on Saturday.
Women’s volleyball
The two-time reigning CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds improved to
13-0 in conference play last weekend with a two-game sweep of No. 9
Brandon (8-4), 3-2 and 3-0. The T-Birds, who lead the national
rankings for the ninth time in as many polls in 2009-2010, go for a
third straight sweep of a Top-10 rival this weekend when they host
No. 8 Calgary (6-6) Friday and Saturday.
Men’s volleyball
The 2008-09 national finalist Laval Rouge et Or, who lead the Top
10 for the third consecutive week, improved to 11-0 in QSSF play
thanks to a pair of straight-set wins over McGill (1-10) and
Montreal (5-6). The Rouge et Or will try to keep their perfect
season alive against a trio of AUS teams this weekend as they are
set to face UNB (5-3), Memorial (1-9) and No. 3 Dalhousie (9-1) in
interlock action.
Track & Field
Saskatchewan tops both women’s and men’s
computer-generated rankings this week. A week after the Huskies
took over from defending CIS champion Windsor atop the
women’s rankings, the Saskatchewan men move up four spots to
No. 1 to complete the double-double.
Wrestling
The reigning CIS champion Calgary women and Simon Fraser men remain
atop the second national rankings of the season. The first rankings
were published back on November 24.
