OTTAWA (CIS) – The No. 1-ranked McGill University Martlets
extended their overall winning streak to 61 straight games over the
past weekend and are now six shy of Alberta’s all-time CIS
women’s hockey record.
The is no movement at the top of the CIS rankings this week as
reigning national champions remain at No. 1 in women’s hockey
(McGill), men’s hockey (UNB), women’s basketball (Simon
Fraser), men’s basketball (Carleton) and women’s
volleyball (UBC), while McMaster holds the pole position for the
second straight week in men’s volleyball.
Women’s hockey
Two-time defending national champion McGill improved to 7-0 in
conference play with a 4-2 defeat of Carleton in its lone outing of
the past week.
The victory allowed the Martlets to extend their overall win streak
against CIS opponents to 61 consecutive games dating back to
December of 2007, six shy of the all-time CIS mark held by Alberta
since 2005. They also lead a 36th straight Top 10 dating back to
November of 2007.
No. 1 McGill enjoys a break in the QSSF schedule this week but
heads down east to the Maritimes to put its streak on the line
against No. 5 StFX, Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie in
non-conference action, before resuming QSSF play on November 28
against Carleton. Friday’s game against the X-Women will be
webcast on www.ssncanada.ca
at 6 p.m. Eastern.
Men’s hockey
Reining University Cup champion UNB improved to 10-0 in conference
play over the past weekend with a 9-3 win over StFX and a 7-1
defeat of Dalhousie. The V-Reds, who received all 17 available
first-place votes in the poll, have been simply dominant since the
start of the regular season, with six wins coming by at least a
four-goal margin.
Back in 2007-08, when they set a number of AUS records en route to
an amazing 26-1-1 mark, the V-Reds started conference play with 11
straight victories before dropping a 5-4 shootout decision to the
Moncton Aigles Bleus. UNB goes for win number 11 Friday against
UPEI and, potentially, number 12 on November 27… against
Moncton.
Women’s basketball
Defending national champion Simon Fraser improved to 5-0 in
conference play with an impressive 24-point win over No. 3-ranked
Regina (3-1), 85-61, and a 102-43 domination of Brandon. The duel
against Regina was a rematch of last year’s CIS final, won
68-62 by SFU.
The Clan, who have now led 30 of 31 coaches polls dating back to
the start of the 2007-08 schedule, visit winless Fraser Valley
(0-4) for a pair this weekend.
Men’s basketball
The reigning CIS champion Ravens (4-0), winners of six of the last
seven W.P. McGree trophies, were impressive in a pair of wins over
top OUA West programs, dominating No. 6 Windsor 95-62 and defeating
Western 80-72 in a rematch of last winter’s CIS
semifinal.
Carleton, which is No. 1 for the 30th time in 31 polls dating back
to the start of the 2007-08 campaign, hosts Laurier (1-3) and
Waterloo (3-1) this weekend.
Women’s volleyball
Two-time reigning CIS champion UBC (6-0) got back on the court
following a one-week break in the Canada West schedule and scored a
pair of decisive straight-set wins over Saskatchewan (0-6).
The Thunderbirds face another winless opponent this weekend as they
host 0-6 Thompson Rivers Friday and Saturday.
Men’s volleyball
The two-time defending OUA champion Marauders had a week off after
dethroning reigning CIS champion Alberta at No. 1.
McMaster is back on the court this weekend with road tilts against
Waterloo (4-2) and Laurier (1-5).
