Guelph sweeps tune-up on 2009 CIS cross country championship course

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons swept the mens and womens races at the Queens Invitational held Saturday on Fort Henry Hill site of the upcoming 2009 CIS Cross Country Championship. Host Queens finished second in the mens event and third in the womens.

Lindsay Carson of Cambridge, Ont., was the top runner in the womens event crossing the line in 17 minutes and 19.1 seconds on the challenging five-kilometre course. Teammate Genevieve Lalonde of Moncton, N.B., was second at 17:34 while McMasters Jessica Pearo of Richmond Hill, Ont., rounded out the podium at 17:53. In all Guelph placed five racers in the top-10 and eight in the top-13.

Patricia Roney of Victoria, B.C. was Queens top finisher placing 14th just over a second off Carsons winning pace at 18:37. Other top-20 results from Queens student-athletes included Leah Larocque of Ottawa and Alecia Kallos of Vancouver who finished 19th and 20th respectively.

Guelph won the team title with 22 points while McMaster was second with 53 points, while the Gaels were third with 94 points.

In the mens event, Matt Brunsting of Sterling, Ont., led a trio of Guelph athletes on the podium with a 10 kilometre run of 31:51.4. Allan Brett of Ottawa, who captured the OUA mens individual title last year on the Fort Henry course finished second in 32.00.4. John Parrott of Newmarket, Ont., was third at 32.11.6

Clay Patterson of Elgin, Ont., was the top Gael claiming eighth place at 32:42.7. Kingstons Matt Hulse finished 12th while Andrew Courchene of Carleton Place, Ont., was 15th.

Guelph easily captured the mens team title placing seven athletes in the top 10 and securing 16 points. Queens finished second with 74 points while the University of Toronto was third with 97 points.

Fort Henry Hill is the same course which will be used for the CIS Cross Country Championship set for November 14. The FISU World University Cross Country Championship is also slated to be held on Fort Henry Hill next April.
