OUA Quarter Final: Varsity Blues blank Gee-Gees; advance to semis
TORONTO - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's
volleyball team defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-0 (25-16, 25-19,
25-17) in OUA quarter-final action on Friday, Feb. 19 at the
Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the top seeded team in the East will advance to the
Final Four next weekend (Feb. 26-27). The event will be hosted by
the highest seed, which will be determined after the McMaster
Marauders and Waterloo Warriors play in the only remaining
quarter-final tomorrow night.
Fifth-year right side hitter and OUA first team all-star
Kristina Vlajas (Toronto) led the Blues with 15
kills, six digs and two blocks. OUA second team all-star
Karlee Diesing of Coquitlam B.C. also stepped up
to the occasion with 10 kills, 10 digs and three serving aces on
the night.
Michelle Wood (Toronto), the OUA East libero of
the year, led all players with 13 digs, while setter
Kathleen Mahannah (North Vancouver, B.C.) had 33
assists in the victory.
The Gee-Gees were led by Karina Krueger-Schwanke's
(Blumenau, Brazil) 10-kill and 12-dig performance, while rookie
Melissa Morelli chipped in with seven kills and
nine digs in the losing effort.
In other quarter-final action across the OUA, the Queen's Gaels
defeated the defending champion York Lions 3-1, while the Western
Mustangs shut out the Guelph Gryphons 3-0. Both the Gaels and
Mustangs have also secured a berth to the semi-final round.
