Varsity Blues in fine form at Fred Foot

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team hosted the annual Fred Foot memorial meet, January 22-23, at the Athletic Centre Field House. 

The Blues had many top finishes over the two-day event, starting with veteran Tory Merrill's (Orangeville, Ont.) first-place finish in the women's pentathlon on Friday night. Merrill finished with an overall score of 3356 points, comfortably ahead of Saugeen's Rita Rudell (3145) and Guelph Gryphons Emma Dobson (3113). 

Distance runners Mike Del Monte (Guelph, Ont.) and Tamara Jewett (Toronto) finished first in the men's and women's 1500m, respectively. Del Monte finished in 3:50.05, while Jewett crossed the line in 4:38.88. 

Defending CIS champion Sarah Boyle (Scarborough, Ont.) was first in the women's high jump (1.70m), while third-year physical education major Sarah Oag (Mississauga, Ont.) finished second with a height of 1.60m. Brett Georgevski (Markham, Ont.) placed second on the men's side, jumping an indoor personal best height of 1.95m. 

Sarah Wells (Unionville, Ont.) and rookie Katie Housley (Burlington, Ont.) finished 1, 2 in the women's 600m, while Alicia Brown (Ottawa) and Athena McBean (Mississauga, Ont.) were second and third in the 300m. 

In the men's pole vault, Geoff Law of Vancouver, B.C. cleared 4.55m and finished second behind former Varsity Blue Doug Creighton (5.00m). 

Jason Mei (Windsor, Ont.) beat all competition in the men's long jump (6.13m) and Alana Stewart (Etobicoke, Ont.) jumped 10.13m to top the women's triple jump competition. Ginhette Reyes (Scarborough, Ont.) finished second in both the women's long jump (4.73) and triple jump (9.93m).

The Varsity Blues return to action next weekend, Jan. 29-30, when they travel to Montreal for the McGill Team Challenge.
