MUSTANGS TRIUMPH AT DON WRIGHT TEAM CHALLENGE

LONDON, Ont., - The Western Mustangs track and field team competed in the 27th Annual Don Wright Team Challenge held at Thompson Arena on Saturday.

There was a big commotion at 11:30 a.m. when Jen Cotten (Barrie, Ont.) contested the long jump. Going into this meet, Cotten already held the meet and arena record. The sciences major was "ecstatic" when she jumped an unbelievable 6.09m which beat her current records and qualified her for CIS national in March.

"I anticipated it," Cotten explained immediately after her jump, "If you don't anticipate it you just won't do it."

The Barrie, Ont., native also contested in the 4x400m, setting another arena and meet record with a team time of 3:53.39, and took the gold in the 60m dash as well, running 7.90.

Many other successes were achieved by Mustangs at this meet. Jennifer Perrault (Burlington, Ont.) took the gold in the 300m with a time of 40.69 putting her eighth in the CIS. Next to teammate Perrault, Lisa Grieve (London, Ont.) placed second in the 300m with a time of 41.30.

"The women's sprint group is very good and deep." said Western Mustangs track and field head coach Vickie Croley.

The men had a successful day as well. Kyle O'Neill (Vienna, Ont.), whose premier event is the 3000m, "showed that he had good speed," said Croley commenting on his showing in the 1500m which he raced in preparation for McGill next weekend, finishing first with a time of 3:58.48.

Scott Leitch (London, Ont.) ran a tight race in the 600m in which he improved upon his season's best time, posting 1:21.40. And Andrew Judge (London, Ont.) took double gold in the long jump (6.88m) and triple jump (14.74m).
