Toronto Varsity Blues shine at Sharon Anderson Invitational

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team hosted the Sharon Anderson Invitational on Saturday, January 9 at the Athletic Centre Field House.

The Blues earned five top-three finishes at the event that honours the late Sharon Anderson - a sprinter and outstanding leader who after graduating from the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, became an administrator and coach for the Toronto Track Club.

2008-09 OUA and CIS champion Sarah Boyle (Scarborough, Ont.) led the way for the Blues with a gold-medal performance in the women's high jump. The fifth-year faculty of physical education and health student jumped 1.73m to beat Brooke Rolland of York Track Club and teammate Laura Maessen (Dartmouth, N.S.), who both cleared 1.69m.

The Varsity Blues men's 4x200m relay team also garnered a gold medal. The four-man team finished in 1:35.17, ahead of the University of Guelph (1:36.24) and York University (1:37.64).

2008-09 CIS silver medalist Jason Wurster (Stevensville, Ont.) placed second in the men's pole vault, clearing a height of 4.85m, only to finish behind 2008 Olympian Massimo Bertocchi (5.00m).

Rounding out the podium finishes was Gareh Murray-Johnson, who placed third in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.81 seconds.
