Gryphon throwers continue to make strides at home

GUELPH, Ont. - Gryphon throwers continued their strong starts to the season at last night’s Gryphon Weight Throw Solution Meet in the University of Guelph Gryphon Dome.

Leading the way once again was second year thrower Tim Hendry (Parry Sound, Ont.) who bettered his life time best by nearly 30 centimetres in taking second in the men’s shot put with his best effort of 15 metres and 57 centimetres. Hendry’s throw moved him into third in the CIS. Gryphon Alumnus Owen Willems captured the shot put as well as the 35 pound weight throw, with throws of 15 metres and 61 centimetres in the shot and 17 metres and 40 centimetres in the weight throw. One of the most impressive throws of the day was by rookie high jumper and pentathlete Jason Diston (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who had a strong 12 metres and 4 centimetre effort.

On the women’s side rookies Meg Lowry (Shanty Bay, Ont.) and Tara Penney (Windsor, Ont.) continued to impress. Lowry captured the women’s weigh with a lifetime best throw of 13 metres and 85 centimetres while Penney had a personal best toss of 11 metres and 25 centimetres to capture the women’s shot.

The entire Gryphon track and field team will be back in action this weekend at the Sharon Anderson Meet in Toronto.
