Swimming Canada partners with les Carabins of l'Université de Montréal
MONTREAL - The national governing body for competitive swimming,
Swimming Canada, announced today a partnership with l'University de
Montréal's high performance sport program. The partnership
between the two entities will offer Montreal based high performance
swimmers an environment to excel in both academic and athletic
avenues via the National Training Centre located in Montreal and
the University.
Centre based athletes that pursue their academic growth at
l'Université de Montréal will benefit from a joint
training program and facilities which will allow them to facilitate
their schedules. Also, these athletes will have the opportunity to
compete at the CIS level for the Carabins. Université de
Montréal swimmers will have the opportunity to train side by
side with some of Canada's best swimmers and gain valuable
experience.
"Building a partnership with l'Université de Montréal
in support of our national program will help move Canadian swimming
to a higher competitive level," said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and
National Coach for Swimming Canada. "The University swim program is
an integral part of Swimming Canada's mandate in developing
competitive national and international athletes. Academic and
athletic excellence go hand in hand in creating great
athletes."
"With this partnership, l'Université de Montréal is
sending a clear message that the best swimmers based in Montreal
can also pursue their academic development at this esteemed
institution," said Manon Simard, Athletic Director at l'UdeM.
During the following weeks, a Head Coach nomination processes for
the UdeM Carabins will be executed by l'UdeM, Swimming Canada and
la Fédération de natation du Québec. This
individual will have the opportunity to receive mentorship from the
Montreal National Centre Head coach.
"Les Carabins have reached the stage in their expansion where they
are ready to take on a stronger role of developing high performance
swimmers. We have a mandate to support athletes at every level and
this partnership with Swimming Canada will help us to provide
quality services to high performance swimmers who which to pursue
their academic endeavours," added Manon Simard, who is also a
national swim team alumni.
By sharing expertise with Swimming Canada, l'UdeM will additionally
supplement its services to athletes representing various clubs
across the province. Club affiliation is an important
characteristic of the Carabins swim program and athletes will
continue to have the option of representing their respective
club.

About les Carabins de l'Université de Montréal
The Carabins' varsity sports program regroups over 300 athletes
that study at the University of Montreal or in either of its two
affiliate schools, HEC Montreal and l'École Polytechnique,
while performing in one of these sports: badminton, football, golf,
women's hockey, swimming, alpine skiing, soccer, tennis and
volleyball.
