Moncton 0 StFX 2 Final

ANTIGONISH, N.S. - The X-Women soccer team improved to 4-2-1 on the AUS season with a 2-0 win over the visiting Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium.

StFX midfielder Stephanie Cameron's goal in the 26th minute was enough for the win. She scored the early goal off an Alix Buch ball.

Maura Woodman scored the insurance marker just 10 minutes later off a chip from the corner of the 18 yard box with the assist coming from Olivia Zanette.

The teams remained scoreless throughout the second half of the game. X-Women goalkeeper Maris Miller recorded the shutout win in nets for StFX, making four saves.

StFX outshot the Aigles Bleues 14-8. Cameron earned Player of the Game honors.

The X-Women currently sit in fourth place in the AUS conference with 13 points, just two points back of both Dalhousie (5-2-0) and Saint Mary's (5-1-0). They will have the Thanksgiving weekend off and will next see action on Oct. 15th and 16th as they travel to Halifax for games against both the Tigers and Huskies.

Toronto 3 Nipissing 1 Final

Ryerson 0 Laurentian 2 Final

SUDBURY, Ont. - The Lady Vees took the pitch for the second time this weekend hoping to bounce back after a tough loss Saturday to the University of Toronto. This time around Laurentian had to matchup against a very physical Ryerson University Rams team looking to match U of T's success. The Lady Vees crushed those hopes with the help of two players with the game ending in a final score of 2-0.

The game opened with a very physical tone with seven players going to ground in the first 5 minutes of the game. As the players adjusted to the speed of the game Ryersons Erica Huculak missed a chance to get the games first goal off a cross from Andrea Raso which was just out of reach. As the first half progressed and the Lady Vees began to find their legs momentum began to shift in their favor. Laurentian won several corners during the half with Amy-Lynn Piton getting the best chance but had her shot blocked by a defender. In the 36th minute a cross from Laurentians Leanne Adams found its way to Lisa Watson who had her shot blocked and deflect right to Brette Vanderwoode who was able to score from inside the 18 yard box ending the half with a 1-0 lead.

Laurentian started the second half right where they left off with speed and aggression. Lisa Watson was able to generate a turn over from Ryersons Kirsten Horgan-Smith at mid-field get around the supporting defender and unleashed a canon from 40 yards out that just dipped under the cross bar to give the Lady Vees a 2-0 lead at the 52nd minute. Moments later Ryerson generated their own chance with short quick passes that sprung Christina Lovatsis. Lovatsis was able to beat Laurentians keeper Michelle Philp out wide but could not convert the tough angled shot. Again at the 79th minute Watson would test her long range shot but had her 30 yarder sail just wide of the near post. Though Watson was unable to convert a second time the 2-0 lead would prove to be all Philp would needed to secure the win for her side as she picked up the clean sheet.

Head Coach Rob Gallo was impressed with his teams effort saying, "Scoring twice brings energy and confidence to a team which can sometimes be hard to find." Gallo was also pleased with his team's defense and their ability to shut down the attack of the Ryerson Rams.

Overall Laurentian played a complete 90 minute game and were able to capitalize when it counted most. Vanderwoode and Watson were thorns in the sides of Ryersons defenders and that proved to be the difference. The Lady Vees will take the pitch again on October 7th at Trent University. Cape Breton 0 No. 6 UPEI 3 Final

The red hot UPEI Womens Panthers extended their perfect season Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over defending AUS champions Cape Breton Capers. UPEI(7-0-0) started quickly against CBU(4-3) being in alone on the Caper keeper 30 seconds into the match and again, 2 minutes later. A fine save on the 1st chance and a missed open net on the 2nd allowed the Capers to escape, at least temporarily.

UPEI opened the scoring in the 13th  minute as Maria Scichilone finished off a scramble in the Caper box, depositing the ball past a cleanly beaten Caper keeper. The Panthers, as has been the case all season, outchanced and outshot CBU by a comfortable margin in the opening half. Clearly the Capers had the advantage in size, however the pace of the UPEI strikers caused their backline problems most of the afternoon.

Cheslie McInnis, enjoying a 2nd strong game on the weekend, added to the Panther lead when her hard, low shot eluded the Caper keeper in the 55th minute. The goal appeared to take the life out of Cape Breton, which managed only 1 shot in the 2nd half.

McInnis completed the scoring with a wonderful strike high to the keepers right in the 80th minute. The goal capped a tremendous run by Andrea Yr Gustavdottir, who raced 70 yards with ball, slowing down around midfield to beat a defender then carrying on down the right sideline before finding McInnis at the top of the 18.

The Panthers outshot the Capers 13-4 and held a 18-4 advantage in chances. Each team had 2 corners on the day as the Panthers recorded their 6th straight shutout.

UPEI has a commanding hold on 1st place, up 6 points on Saint Marys and Dalhousie and holding the tiebreaker on both teams. The Panthers have defeated and have finished their schedule with the 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th place teams.

Panther rookie fullback and BC native  Kim Brown left the field in an ambulance following a collision in the 8th minute. The game was delayed 35 minutes as  Brown was attended to on the field with what initial reports are indicating is a broken leg. Lynn Symington, in her 1st action of the season, filled in admirably at left back for Brown.

Coach Mike Redmond’s satisfaction with the unbeaten Panthers was secondary to his concern for Brown following the game .”Yes, we’re happy to be 7-0 at the break and happy to be scoring more than 1 goal. But Kim is the bigger issue right now. She’s been exceptional for us, and has what  appears to be a serious injury. Kim’s health is our main thought at this point.

UPEI returns to action in 2 weeks on the road against UNB and Moncton

No. 1 Laurier 4 Guelph 0 Final

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons matched up against the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks this afternoon (Oct. 2) in Guelph, Ont., but weren’t able to ward off the Golden Hawks attacks, and lost the game 4-0.

The Gryphons dropped down to 2-5-1 in standings, while the Hawks hung onto their streak with 9-0-0.

The Gryphons were strong in the first half, maintaining equal possession across the field. 17 minutes into the game Laurier claimed their first goal after Alex Keddy (Mississauga, ON) deflected an initial shot at net off the post and Golden Hawk Emily Brown (Waterloo, ON) rebounded into the back of the net.

Guelph kept up a good resistance for the remainder of the half but struggled to find the net. The Gryphons had only landed one official shot on net in the first half until Jennifer Dunn (Vancouver, B.C) nearly tied the match after firing a straight shot into Laurier’s net with only two minutes remaining; but Golden Hawk goal-keep Mallory Woeller (Kinburn, ON) made a solid save.

The Gryphon’s defense broke down in the second half, allowing Laurier to take control in their end and eventually giving up three goals. The second goal came from Leanne Mulnar (Kitchener, ON) after she managed to get past three trailing Gryphon defensemen. Goal-keep Keddy misjudged the shot and Mulnar added another goal to the board.

The last two Golden Hawk goals both came from forward Julie Maheu (Oakville, ON). 72 minutes into the match Maheu snuck a quick goal past Gryphon defense to confirm Laurier’s lead. The Gryphons fought hard to repair the damage but were unable to push through Laurier’s back four. The final shot of the match by Maheu was with less than three minutes left on the board – Keddy dove but was unable to save it. The game’s final score was 4-0 for the still undefeated Golden Hawks.

The Gryphons next play the Brock Badgers on October 7, in St. Catharines. The game begins at 1 p.m.

Bishop's 0 No. 2 Montreal 7 Final

McMaster 1 Western 2 Final

Brock 0 Windsor 2 Final

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Lancer women’s soccer team split a pair of home soccer games on Alumni Weekend. On Friday night they fell to the McMaster Marauders 2-0, and then rebounded on Sunday to shut out the Brock Badgers by the same 2-0 score.

The Marauders applied a great deal of pressure and possession right off of the bat in horrible weather conditions, heavy winds and rain on a cold evening at Alumni Field

Candace Garrod had an opportunity at the 9 minute mark, beating a couple of Marauder defenders; however keeper Brittany Duffers aggressively came out of her goal to make the save

In the 26th minute, McMaster striker Natalie Brace shot from the 18-yard line and was able to hit the bottom of the Windsor goal, making it 1-0 for the Marauders

In the 36th minute mark Lancer keeper, Singer, had to come up with a big save to keep the game within one.

Windsor showed signs of pressure early on in the 2nd half, with a couple of decent attempts off of their corner kicks, however were unable to connect

Windsor's best scoring chance came at the 59th minute mark when Sara Kox sent a ball into the box to hit Garrod. McMaster’s keeper challenged the play and was able to make the save

The Marauders second and final goal came at the 62 minute mark, as a strong wind carried Emma Mangialardi's shot over the head of the Lancer keeper.

Against the Badgers, the Lancers offense came out firing and just 5 minutes into the game striker Candace Garrod was able to break through the Brock defense and put one past the keeper into the bottom corner of the goal.

Just a few minutes later in the 10th minute mark, Garrod is able to dribble through the Badgers defense and hit the corner again, putting the Lancers up 2-0 early on in the game.

Lancer midfielder Mereasa Brownlie also had a couple of nice opportunities to score at the 15 and 16th minute mark, however her shots were saved by Brock's keeper Amber Cubitt.

At the 26th minute mark, Brock striker Bruzzese had their best scoring chance of the game, but Windsor keeper Rebecca Singer was able to come up with a diving save.

In the 55th minute of play, Garrod had an opportunity to score her third goal of the game, however was stopped by Brock's aggressive keeper.

Defender Sara Kox had a beautiful attempt on a free-kick but was just wide of the goal.

Singer came up with one more save in the 86th minute mark to record the shutout.

Windsor travels to Waterloo Friday to face the Warriors.

No. 5 Trinity Western 4 Manitoba 1 Final

WINNIPEG - After suffering a 2-0 loss the day before, the University of Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team faced off against the Trinity Western Spartans on Sunday, October 2 at the University of Manitoba Turf Field West.

Despite a good effort on behalf of the Bisons, Trinity Western just put up too much offense for them to contain, and the Spartans would pick up a 4-1 victory.

Trinity Western came out strong in the first half, and immediately began putting the pressure on the Bisons.  Within the first 10 minutes of game time, the Spartans’ Jenna Di Nunzio got in close on goal and fired a kick that rang off the bottom of the crossbar and bounced out; a lucky break and a wake-up call for Manitoba.

The Spartans wouldn’t be denied though, and shortly after, Kelly Cook would fire a long but accurate shot on net that the Bisons’ goalie Chloe Werle would dive for, but only manage to get her fingertips on, and the ball would sail into the net, putting Trinity Western up 1-0 early on.

Manitoba wouldn’t take long to answer, as Paula Fast got in close on net for a shot that was initially stopped by the Spartans’ goaltender Kristen Funk.  Funk couldn’t control the rebound though, and Fast made no mistake on her second shot, burying it behind Funk and tying the game up at 1-1.

With time winding down, it looked like the first half would come to a close at a 1-1 tie.  In the last minute, Trinity Western’s Cook would strike again, from almost the same position on the field as her first goal.  She launched the ball clear over Werle’s head, and the Spartans would go up 2-1 to finish off the first half.

Cook was looking to put up her third goal of the night as the second half got underway, and had a couple of opportunities to do it, but Werle stood her ground and kept her team within one.

Manitoba struggled to put up much offense in the second half, and Trinity Western was only putting up more and more shots on net.  The Spartans’ Jennifer Castillo would put her team up by two when she hit a header out of the corner that Werle couldn’t find, and the ball would end up in the back of the net.  3-1 Trinity Western.

It looked like the end was near for the Bisons when they were fouled inside the box, giving a penalty kick to the Spartans.  Colleen Webber would take the kick, and send it low towards the left corner.  Werle made a spectacular dive and just got to the ball in time to keep it from hitting the mesh.

With regulation time expired, three minutes of added time was enough for Trinity Western to pick up yet another goal, as Werle had trouble controlling a rebound that would be found by Daniela Gerig, who kicked it home for the 4-1 lead.

Despite multiple great saves from the Bisons’ player of the game, Chloe Werle, the score was too much for Manitoba to overcome, and the game would finish at a 3-1 victory for Trinity Western.  With the result of the game, Manitoba’s record falls to 2-6-0 and Trinity Western climbs to 7-1-0.

“We had some of our best moments,” said head coach Chris Lewis on the weekend series.  “We’ve just got to stop playing the same old tune, we have to turn that corner and start putting the ball in the net.  We need to stop giving up the mistakes, and start capitalizing on our opportunities.”

The Bisons will enjoy a conference bye next weekend, and play next on October 15 in Victoria against the Vikes.

Saskatchewan 3 No. 4 Alberta 2 Final

EDMONTON - One day after a quick start earned them their sixth win of the season, a slow start cost the No.4 ranked University of Alberta Pandas’ soccer team points, as well as first place in Canada West, as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.

The Pandas surrendered three goals in the opening 25 minutes of the game, and could never recover.  They now show a 6-2 record on the season, and sit in second place in the conference, trailing the Trinity Western Spartans who are 6-1.

It was a 180 degree difference from Saturday’s contest in which the Pandas struck three times for goals in the game’s opening 35 minutes, en route to a 3-0 shutout win.

Heather Lund and Amanda Black scored for Alberta, and combined for five goals and six points on the weekend.  Lund notched her seventh of the season, best in Canada West, and her 24th as a Panda, which puts her one goal away from tying Alberta’s all-time career scoring record.

Elizabeth Hudon scored a pair of goals for the Huskies, while Lindsay Manz notched the other one.  Hudon also drew an assist on the afternoon giving her eight points in the same number of games, which ties her for the conference lead.

She scored the game’s opening goal just two minutes in, catching the Alberta backline flat footed and beating Pandas’ goalie Kelti Biggs from in close.

Lund tied the score five minutes later when she shifted through the Saskatchewan defence, walked in on Huskie goalie Marissa Wilford and beat her with a low shot.

However, that level playing field soon evaporated, as Saskatchewan scored twice in the span of 10 minutes, first when Hudon picked her up second of the afternoon in the 14th minute, and then again when Manz took a through ball from Hudon, split the Alberta defence and slotted the ball underneath a diving Biggs in the Alberta goal for the 3-1 lead in the 24th minute.

Alberta used the halftime break well, playing the second half much more focused, and clamping down on chances against, while creating their own on the Saskatchewan goal.

They drew to within one goal when Amanda Black buried her third of the weekend in the 75th minute, and Lund had a glorious opportunity to tie the match as injury time neared.  The veteran striker was picked out by Kayla Michaels all along the Huskie six-yard box, but Lund couldn't convert, pushing her shot just wide of the post, leaving the finish just out of reach for Alberta.

The Pandas are next in action on the Thanksgiving long weekend, as they travel to face the Calgary Dinos on October 15 at 12:00 pm, and then the Lethbridge Pronghorns on October 16 at noon.  Saskatchewan will make the same trip, except the Huskies will face the Pronghorns on Saturday and the Dinos on Sunday.
