Brock 1 York 1 Final

TORONTO - The York University Lions women's soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw with the Brock Badgers on Friday afternoon (Sept. 9) at York Stadium.

The Badgers opened the scoring in the 35th minute when rookie Meaghan Krawczyk scored her second of the season to give the Badgers an early 1-0 lead. But it was short-lived, as the Lions tied it up minutes later on a goal by Nicole Markowitz of Toronto, also her second of the season.

Markowitz, a three-time OUA all-star, had multiple chances to score in the first half. Early in the game she had back-to-back shots on goal that were both stopped.

Lions goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini of Newmarket, Ont., made a big save late in the first half to keep the score tied at one.

The game remained tied at ones for most of the second half. In the 80th minute, Markowitz sent rookie Colleen Beesley of Richmond Hill, Ont., in alone behind the goalkeeper and she had a wide open net but the shot went wide of the net.

The Lions got another chance for the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute when a long ball by Markowitz from the corner went right in front of the net. Brock goalkeeper Luciana Di Paolo of Newmarket, Ont., fumbled the ball in front of her but kept it out of the net and away from Beesley, who was waiting on the doorstep.

A nearly identical play unfolded two minutes later but again Di Paolo made the save.

The Lions now have five points on the season with a 1-1-2 record, while the result gave the Badgers their first point of the season.

After four games in the season's first six days, the Lions now have an eight-day break before they play again. They will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they host the Guelph Gryphons for a 1pm game at York Stadium.

No. 8 McGill 2 Bishop's 0 Final

A pair of goals by Rebecca Green gave the No. 8-ranked McGill Martlets a 2-0 shutout of the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec university soccer action this afternoon at Coulter Field. Green scored in the 18th and 39th minutes, both times on passes from Kathleen Wakeling, to stake the Martlets to their 2-0 halftime lead.

Green's first goal came on a low shot from just inside the 18-yard box in the 18th minute, while she doubled the visitor's lead on a through ball from Wakeling 21 minutes later.

Second-year goalkeeper Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, Ont.) made eight saves in 90 minutes, including a pair of big stops in the second half that kept the Gaiters within striking distance. For McGill, Victoria Muccilli played the first 70 minutes, while Shimone Slomowitz replaced her for the final 20. Neither goalkeeper was called upon to make a stop.

McGill took 19 shots at the Bishop's net, while the Gaiters shot three times at the Martlet cage.
