No. 1 Queen's 4 Carleton 0 Final

OTTAWA - The Carleton University Ravens women’s soccer team suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat to the efficient Queen’s University Gaels on Wednesday afternoon at Ravens’ Field.

Head coach Alex McNutt fielded a young team, featuring many rookie players, for their home opener.

The Gaels generated much of the early offence, scoring in the tenth minute. Jackie Tessier (Peterborough, Ont.) stood unmarked to finish past Ravens goalie Rachel Bedek (St. Thomas, Ont.).

The Gaels began to dominate the game from that point on. They struck again just before halftime with Tessier getting her second.

The Ravens started the second half brightly, with first year Kwanza Robest-Prescod (Ottawa) leading many of the runs into the Gaels’ half.

But the Gaels again seized upon a Ravens defensive error with Kelli Chamberlain (North Bay, Ont.) scoring the game’s third.

Riley Fillion (Alexandria, Ont.) rounded out the scoring for Queen’s in the 68th minute.

With the loss, Carleton’s record falls to 1-2. The Ravens return to action on Sept. 11 when they take on the RMC Paladins at 1 p.m.

Ravens: 0+0=0
 Gaels: 2+2=4

McMaster 0 York 2 Final

TORONTO - The York University Lions women's soccer team earned its first win of the season on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 7), defeating the visiting McMaster Marauders 2-0 at York Stadium.

The game winner came off the foot of rookie Colleen Beesley of Richmond Hill, Ont., who scored her first career goal in the 29th minute to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

The scored stayed that way into half-time and through the first part of the second half. In the 55th minute, Beesley nearly scored her second of the game when she went in alone on McMaster goalkeeper Brittany Duffey of Markham, Ont., but fired her shot just wide.

The teams continued trading possession throughout the second half but could not break though the defence. In the 90th minute, Lions fourth-year midfielder Nicole Markowitz of Toronto scored her first goal of the season to give her team an insurance marker.

That goal nearly proved necessary as McMaster rookie Stephanie Davis of Mississauga, Ont., came in on Lions goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini of Newmarket, Ont., just moments later and fired the shot toward the left goal post. Fiorini did not get there in time but the ball bounced off the post.

Fiorini earned the shutout in net, her second of the season after a scoreless draw with the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday.

With the win, the Lions improved their record to 1-1-1 on the season and now have four points. The loss was McMaster's first of the season, dropping its record to 2-1.

The Lions will be back in action again on Friday (Sept. 9) when they take on the Brock Badgers at York Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1pm.

Laurentian 1 Nipissing 1 Final

NORTH BAY, ON – The Laurentian Lady Vees headed down  highway 17 to face their northern rivals, the Nipissing Lakers, on Wednesday night.  The blistering start that the Lady Vees got off to to start the season, scoring 7 goals in two games, quickly cooled down as the girls were only able to pot one, tying Nipissing 1-1.

The Lady Vees came out of the gate rather flat and the Lakers took advantage of that, continuously winning balls in the mid-field.  An early miscue, in the 13th minute, by Michelle Philp (Etobicoke, ON) resulted in a Nipissing goal.  Philp mishandled a ball and the Nipissing attacker, Sara Dorval (Thunder Bay, ON), pounced on it putting Nipissing up 1-0.

Following the early goal, the Lady Vees pressed hard, creating numerous chances that resulted in multiple breakaways and hit posts.  Finally, in the 60th minute, Lisa Watson (Newmarket, ON) answered for Laurentian as she knotted the game at 1.  The Lady Vees had a few more chances late but could not find the go-ahead goal and the game ended 1-1.

Coach Rob Gallo was not pleased with the overall performance and knows the team must be more focused going forward.  “We have to be prepared to play harder,” he said.  “We need to commit to a full 90 minutes and we need to come out wanting to beat the other time right from the opening whistle.”

The Lady Vees take a trip south this weekend as they play Ryerson on Saturday and Toronto on Sunday, both games kicking off at 1pm.  Follow www.luvoyaguers.com for up to date information and results.

Laurentian University's Department of Athletics is home to 15 varsity sports teams. The Voyageurs and Lady Vees decorated history of pride and tradition includes 61 provincial championships as well as 9 national championships in 50 years of competition.
