Windsor 0 McMaster 2 Final

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster women's soccer team earned their first win of the 2011 season over the Windsor Lancers with a score of 2-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Marauders Julia Maiolino (North York, Ont.) and Hayley Marler (Ancaster, Ont.) were the two goal scorers of the match.

The first half saw the Marauder goalkeeper Brittany Duffey (Markham, Ont.) make some keys saves early on to keep McMaster in the game. Ball possession was even for both teams throughout the first, with breakaways from both the Lancers and the Marauders. McMaster forwards Marler and Natalie Brace (Warwickshire, Eng.) both had opportunities to score early on.

In the second, the Marauders put on the pressure keeping the ball in the Lancer's half before Melanie Van Der Hoop (Oakville, Ont.) was given a yellow card in the 50th minute.

As play evened out, Marler found herself out on her own on a breakaway around the 61st minute but couldn't capitalize against Lancer goalkeeper Rebecca Singer (Amhertsburg, Ont.) keeping the score at 0-0.

In the 75th minute of the match, midfielder Maiolino took a lobbed shot just inside the left corner of the 18-yard box over Windsor's keepers head to put the Marauders ahead. This is Maiolino's first goal as a Marauder after coming off a torn ACL in 2010.

After ten minutes of the Lancers finally starting to put on the pressure, Marler saw a chance at another breakaway, taking on Windsor's goal keeper and beating her for the second goal of the match. The veteran forward helped reinforce the Marauder win in the 85th minute. Defender Cristina Leonardelli (Woodbridge, Ont.) was solid in the back for McMaster throughout the match.

The Marauders take on the Western Mustangs on Sunday at 1pm looking for their second win of the 2011 season.

York 0 Laurier 4 Final

WATERLOO, Ont. (September 3, 2011) - Wilfrid Laurier midfielder Alyssa Lagonia of Kitchener, Ont., scored two goals and set up another two as the Golden Hawks got past the York Lions 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

In the season opener for both teams, it was the Hawks who showed the least amount of rust and picked up their game right where they left off last season after earning a CIS silver medal. Laurier controlled the play for much of the game and outshot the visitors 11-2.

The Golden Hawks opened the scoring in the 34th minute after forward Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., was taken down in the box. Lagonia stepped up to take the penalty kick and made no mistake, burying the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

That scoreline would hold until early in the second half when Lagonia once again created a chance for Laurier. Her shot from 25 yards out was deflected off the bar by York's keeper Sarah Fiorini of Newmarket, Ont., but fell right to the feet of Krista Cellucci of Mississauga, Ont., who finished off the chance for her first goal of the year.

10 minutes later, the game would be halted due to a storm, but once play resumed, the Hawks continued to dominate and earned a second penalty kick in the 88th minute. It was Lagonia to take the kick again and she buried a shot high over the keeper to make it 3-0.

Just over a minute later, Lagonia set up rookie midfielder Jacqueline Lence of Mississauga, Ont., off a free kick to round out the scoring.

Mallory Woeller of Kinburn, Ont., got the start in goal for Laurier and earned the shutout.

The Hawks will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

In the opening half the teams went back and forth for about 20 minutes before Western started to control the play in the midfield. The score after 45 minutes was tied 0-0.

The second half was much of the same as Western controlled the tempo of the game and won the majority of free balls. They also took advantage of a couple Brock defensive mistakes which would prove to be costly.

Leading the Western offense was junior Jenna Schroeder (Sudbury, Ont.) who was in on all three markers adding two goals (47th and 60th minute) and one assist. Her second goal of the afternoon was on a penalty kick, after she was taken down inside the box by Brock senior defender Stephanie DiMartino (Markham, Ont.). Schroeder was named Game MVP for her performance.

Ottawa 1 Toronto 0 Final
TORONTO - The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team opened their 2011-12 season Saturday afternoon (Sept. 3) with a 1-0 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Varsity Centre.

With the loss, the Blues begin their season 0-1 after a game that featured strong defensive efforts from both sides.

Despite the loss, Toronto goalkeeper Sara Petrucci from Bolton, Ont., played a strong game, making several key saves as the Gee-Gees directed four shots at the Toronto goal.

Ottawa’s midfielder Julia Francki was the only shooter to beat Petrucci on the day. Francki’s tally came at 14:04 of the first half, giving Ottawa their first win of the season.

Mississauga, Ont., native Laura Machado registered the Blues lone shot at Ottawa goalkeeper Cynthia Leblanc, as Toronto pushed hard for the tying goal at the end of the second half.

The Gee-Gees controlled play for most of the first, but Toronto came out aggressively in the second, falling just short of tying the game when the final whistle blew.

The Blues return to the field on Sunday, September 4, as they play host to the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Centre. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Trent 0 Laurentian 4 Final

SUDBURY, ON – The flood gates opened up, both literally and figuratively, Saturday afternoon in Sudbury as the Trent Excalibur came to town to face the Laurentian Lady Vees.  The rain began before kick-off and did not let up until the final whistle, similar to the Lady Vees’ attack.  By the time the clouds moved on, the damage had been done and Laurentian walked away with a 4-0 victory.

Unlike the game a night before, the Lady Vees found the mark early and often and the game was never truly in doubt.  Just 10 minutes into the game, Renee Jacques (Sudbury, ON) played a wonderful corner into the box that found Dayna Corelli (Sudbury, ON) unmarked on the back post and she slid it into the empty net for the first goal of the game and her second of the season.  The only quality chance for Trent in the first half came as a result of some miscommunication on the Laurentian back end but Michelle Philp (Etobicoke, ON) played it well and kept the score 1-0.  After 45 minutes the score remained 1-0 in a half dominated by Laurentian.

The Lady Vees continued their dominance in the second half and started to find their groove early.  At the 50 minute mark, Lisa Watson (Newmarket, ON) put a cross in the eluded the Trent keeper, Sarah MacGregor (Stittsville, ON), and Brette Vanderwoude (Brantford, ON) tucked the ball into the back of the net.  Just two minutes later, Vanderwoude was at it again, this time burying a shot into the top right corner.

Trent had a chance to crawl back into the game in the 55th minute with a penalty shot but Sarah Batley (Peterborough, ON) crashed the shot off the post, preserving the shutout.  Watson finished off the scoring in the 75th minute as she fired a low shot home after receiving a great cross from Carlie Bettiol (Waterdown, ON).  Philp earned the clean sheet, her second on the season and second in as many games.

Coach Gallo was delighted with his team’s start to the season.  “I thought we again played a strong second half over the first half,” he said.  “Our passing and organization was better and we managed to score more than one goal. Our defence again was solid and made few mistakes. We will train hard on Monday and prepare for the match against Nipissing on Wednesday.”

The Lady Vees head to North Bay this Wednesday to face the Lakers in the second leg of the Riley Cup, which Laurentian currently leads 5-0 on aggregate. Continue to monitor the Lady Vees’ progress at www.luvoyageurs.com.

Laurentian University's Department of Athletics is home to 15 varsity sports teams. The Voyageurs and Lady Vees decorated history of pride and tradition includes 61 provincial championships as well as 9 national championships in 50 years of competition.
