Windsor 1 Western 0  Final

WINDSOR, Ont. - Marianne Wright propelled the Windsor Lancer women’s soccer to a 1-0 win over the Western Mustangs Sunday afternoon on Alumni Field.

Wright’s late goal in the 89th minute came from a shot inside the 18-yard box into the bottom corner of the net to beat Western keeper Melanie Oberholzer and give the Lancers the win.

With the win the Lancers remain undefeated with a 2-0-2 record and sit in third place in the OUA West.

The Lancers dominated the Mustangs throughout the first half, maintaining ball possession and using a strong defense to prevent Western from registering a single shot.

The Lancers had a number of chances to get on the board yet failed to find the net, as the score remained tied at zero heading into the break.

The second half became much more intense as the Lancers and Mustangs battled back and forth trying to gain possession of the ball. Windsor had a number of quality scoring opportunities from Heather Daichendt, Candace Garrod, and Meresa Brownlie but could not convert the ball into the net.

With just a few minutes remaining, Windsor keeper Rebecca Singer was forced to make a great save on a Western striker to keep her team in the game, and help the Lancers to a 1-0 victory just a few minutes later.

Singer registered three saves for the Lancers for her second straight shut-out, while Oberholzer made 8 saves for the Mustangs.

Windsor will host the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday September 25th at 1:00pm, followed by the McMaster Marauders on Sunday. Game time is also at 1:00pm.

Waterloo 1  Brock 0  Final

ST. CATHARINES, Ont - The Brock Badgers women's soccer team (0-2-1 OUA) battled hard but were not able to beat the Waterloo Warriors goalkeeper as they dropped their second consecutive contest 1-0 Sunday.

Despite dominating play for much of the game, including 12 shots on goal and multiple scoring chances from in close, the Badgers weren't able to solve Waterloo keeper Lesia Bandura.

The Badgers peppered Bandura with shots, hit two posts and had several near misses but were unable to find the back of the goal.  Leading the offensive charge for Brock were rookie Larissa Bruzzese (Welland, Ont.), and third year forwards Cassandre Van Bakel (Aurora, Ont.) and Jill Geier (Ancaster, Ont.)

The game's only goal came from the foot of Waterloo's Delta Pilote as she was able to chip a ball over the head of Brock goalkeeper Syreeta Rhoden (Niagara Falls, Ont.) from a bad angle in the 78th minute.

The Badgers defense held strong for most of the contest allowing only two shots on goal.

The team will be on the road Wednesday in Hamilton as they do battle with McMaster for a 6 p.m. kick-off.

Laurentian 2 Ottawa 0  Final

SUDBURY, Ont. - The Lady Vees played spoiler today as they upset the sixth ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees by a score of 2-0 at the Laurentian soccer field.

The Lady Vees applied offensive pressure from the opening whistle, pushing the pace and playing the opening minutes in the Ottawa half. Laurentian would get on the board early in the first half as a free kick taken in the 18th minute by Lisa Watson (Newmarket, On.) led to a scramble in front of Ottawa keeper Melissa Pesant (Gatineau, Q.C.). Eventually the ball would land on the foot of Leanne Adams (Mississauga, On.) giving the Lady Vees a 1-0 lead.

Eight minutes later, Adams would be rewarded with another goal as the Pesant would miss her clearing attempt, leaving Adams with a wide open net to put her Lady Vees up 2-0. The rest of the half saw back and forth action including a header by Watson that was cleared off the goal line by Gee-Gees defender Sophie Joyal (Montreal, QC) to keep the score 2-0. The LU defense stood their ground holding the Ottawa attackers to only two shots at the half.

The second half saw both teams exchange chances as Ottawa was beginning to press hard to get back in the game. Laurentian goalkeeper Michelle Philp (Toronto, ON) would punch away a ball crossed dangerously toward the net in the 58th minute to hold the two goal advantage for her squad. In the 68th minute Laurentian threatened to increase their lead when a corner taken by Dayna Corelli (Sudbury, ON) was headed by Sarah Snyder (Cornwall, On.) but she would be denied as the ball was cleared by an Ottawa defender.

Late in the game, Philp would come up big again as she came charging out to block a shot that came off the foot of Aley Jotham (Ottawa, ON) making her sixth save of the afternoon to preserve the shutout, her second in as many days. With the win, the Lady Vees hand Ottawa their first loss of the season as they went on to win their second straight game.

"I thought that the girls played extremely well and showed a lot of energy today," said head coach Rob Gallo. "The six points this weekend was huge for us and it was nice to see Renee Jacques (Sudbury, ON) stand out against her former team and play with a lot of confidence. We played as a team today and we showed a lot of chemistry which is a positive sign as we continue to forward."

Next for the Lady Vees will be the RMC Paladins and Queen's Gaels as they will travel to Kingston for a pair of games. First for the Lady Vees are the Paladins on Saturday, September 25 followed by the Gaels on Sunday, September 26. Kick off for both games is set for 12 p.m. followed by the Voyageurs at 2:15 p.m.

McMaster 1  Guelph 0  Final

The Guelph Gryphon women’s soccer team took on the McMaster Marauders this afternoon (Sept 19) at Alumni Stadium in Guelph. The Marauders took a 1-0 win after scoring three minutes into the contest. The Gryphons now sit with a 1-2-2 regular season record.

The first half of the game started out in McMasters favour after Cheryl Druchok (Palgrave, ON) scored their first goal only three minutes in. The Marauders ran into the Guelph field with confidence and dominated the Gryphons. They had many opportunities on net, but they struggled with accuracy and most of them were shot too high or too wide.

Gryphon defence managed to hold it together for the remainder of the first half but not without difficulty and constant harassment from the Marauders. Gryphon player Rachel Rennick (Toronto, ON) had a chance at McMaster’s net thirty minutes into the game but the Marauder’s goal keep Jocelyn Wilkins (London, ON) was able to hold on.

The Gryphons picked up their game in the second half trying to even up the score, forcing many plays into the Marauders end.  Kristin Southgate (Georgetown, ON) had an amazing shot on net 60 minutes into the game, but Wilkins once again swooped in and stopped it. McMaster’s offence continually had chances on Guelph’s net but they still struggled with their accuracy.

Gryphon Lauren Hampton (Calgary, AB) can be given much of the credit for the defensive success of the second half. She interfered with almost every Marauder attack, including the closest call of the game, when Gryphon’s goal keep Joelle Chartrain (Calgary, AB) ran out of the net to stop a shot, leaving it open for a rebound.  Hampton raced in to take her place and fired it out of the danger zone.

The Gryphons will travel to Windsor for their next game against the Windsor Lancers on Sept 25th. The game will begin at 1pm.

Ryerson 0  Toronto 0  Final

TORONTO - Up against a previously CIS ranked University of Toronto squad, the Ryerson women's soccer team earned a point with a 0-0 tie at Varsity Centre on Sunday.

The Rams [0-1-4] are content with a point against the Varsity Blues [3-1-2], ultimately fairing better than previous Blues opponents, but concede that there were missed opportunities.

Mohammadi added that while the Rams were pinned down for the last twenty minutes, the defense kept its composure, holding on for Ryerson's fourth tie.

Shannon Cosgrove, a first-year right-winger, did go for an x-ray after the game according to Mohammadi after hitting her head on the ground.  The injury does not appear to be serious, as the Pickering, Ont., native is thought to have a mild concussion.

Despite being cross-town rivals, both teams played a clean game with no cards being issued.
