LETHBRIDGE, AB - On the strength of two goals in each half, the CIS third ranked UBC Thunderbirds completed a weekend sweep of Alberta foes, downing the Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-1 Sunday afternoon in Canada West women’s soccer action. With the win the Thunderbirds improve to 2-0, while the Horns fall to 0-2.

UBC-Lethbridge Game Stats

The Thunderbirds were in control for majority of the contest and directed 37 shots towards the Horns goal, while limiting the Horns to only 9 shot attempts. If not for the stealer goaltending from Jaleesa Johnston, who finished with 16 saves, the score could have been much worse.

The third ranked T-Birds struck early; with the game only seven minutes only Rachel Sawer volleyed Jordan Kitagawa’s perfect pass past Johnston low to the right corner.

Only four minutes later the Horns had a superb chance to even the match at one with Sherry Latrace breaking in only to hook the ball outside the left post with the T-Bird keeper guessing the other direction.

Johnston kept the Horns close making numerous quality saves, none better than a leaping deflection over the bar off the foot of UBC’s Caitland Davie. In the dying minutes of the half, the Horns would final strike tying the score at one, with Andrea Nippard catching Meghan Best off her line, lifting a long range shot over Best’s out stretched arm.

In injury time, the Thunderbirds marched down the field off the re-start regaining their one goal lead. Off a mishandled save by Johnston, Lisa Furutani jumped on the loose ball making no mistake. The relentless T-Bird attack was dangerous the entire second half and picked up goals in the 67th and 74th minutes to seal the victory. Sophmore Janine Frazao scored both markers.

CALGARY - Nikki Wright scored the game-winning goal in the second half to lift the top-ranked Trinity Western Spartans past the University of Calgary Dinos 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

The 2008 Canada West Player of the Year and 2009 First Team Canada West All-Star put the Spartans up for good midway through the second half, putting it just inside the far post after a terrific pass from midfielder Natalie Boyd.

T-Birds-Dinos Game Stats

Forward Alexi Foster got her Spartans on the board first, finally putting a close-range shot past Calgary goaltender Kristen Barton amongst a scrum in front of the Dinos net. Both Foster and Calgarian Colleen Webber had their initial shots stymied by Barton before the open net was found.

With steadily improving offensive pressure throughout the first half, the Dinos were rewarded by their midfielder Brittany Benson in the 15th minute. Taking a pass from Lindsay Burrowes, Benson’s long shot just squeaked past Spartans goaltender Kristen Funk to tie the game up at one.

Funk had eight saves in the victory for the Spartans, while Barton had her second eight-save loss of the weekend despite solid play in net for the Dinos.

Shortly after halftime the game was delayed due to a scary situation involving rookie Trinity Western defender Jennifer Castillo. After a Dinos free kick went wide of the Spartans’ net, Castillo fell to the ground seemingly untouched and was attended by training staff. She was taken off the pitch via ambulance.

by Braden Konschuh, U of Regina Sports Info

REGINA – The University of Regina women’s soccer team got a goal from first-year forward Melanie King with 15 minutes remaining in the second half and battled to a 1-1 draw against the Victoria Vikes on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.

Vikes-Cougars Game Stats

With the Cougars trailing by one, Catherine Lukan – who had just been subbed into the game – found King with a long breakaway pass. King was able to hold off a Victoria defender, then drilled a shot into the left corner for her first goal as a Cougar.

The draw pushes Regina’s record to 1-0-1, while Victoria moves to 0-0-2 on the season.

Regina had the best chance in the scoreless first half. In the 34th minute, Tegan Koroluk had a shot from in tight saved by Victoria keeper Tanya Jones. The rebound went to Molly Glass in front of the net, but her shot just sailed over the bar.

Victoria coach Tracy David made five substitutions at halftime, and the Vikes responded almost immediately. Just three minutes into the second half, Jacqueline Harrison took advantage of a defensive breakdown, charged down the left side, and beat Regina keeper Michelle Anderson with a low drive to put the Vikes up by one.

After King’s goal, both teams had chances to grab the lead. Regina’s Megan Florizone teed up a blast from about 25 yards out that sailed about three feet over the bar, and the Vikes had two good chances in injury time but weren’t able to beat Anderson.

Fraser Valley 1 Manitoba 0

by Jordan Thompson, U of Manitoba Sports Info Assistant

WINNIPEG - The Fraser Valley Cascades were victorious over the Manitoba Bisons in Canada West women's soccer action on Sunday, ending an extremely close game at 1-0.  Both teams had offensive chances, but a key goal from Megan Webster, and unwavering net-minding by Chantelle Biagioni, was the edge Fraser Valley needed to pull off the win.

Cascades-Bisons Game Stats

The second half looked to be similar to the first, with both teams playing aggressively, and scoring chances for both sides.  Manitoba Keeper, Laura Harrison, made a key save off of a corner kick, in the 24th minute, to keep the score at 1-0 for Fraser Valley.  Though the Bisons played a great second half, the solid net minding of Chantelle Biagioni proved to be too much for Manitoba to overcome, and the game came to a close, at 1-0 for the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The first half saw both teams come out aggressively, working hard to get the opening goal of the game.  The first opportunity went to Manitoba in the 11th minute, with a great chance in behind the Fraser Valley defense, but it was snatched up quickly by Keeper Chantelle Biagioni.  In the 20th minute of the game, Manitoba took a foul, and a free kick for Fraser Valley was lined up 30 yards out from the net.  Megan Webster sent the ball sailing towards the Bisons net, and Keeper Laura Harrison jumped to make the save, but it proved to be just slightly too high and Fraser Valley notched the first goal of the game.  Working hard to make up the ground, Manitoba had a few more chances in the first half, but solid goal keeping by Biagioni preserved the 1-0 lead for her team, heading into the second half.

Pandas-Huskies Game Stats

SASKATOON - University of Alberta Panda Amanda Black scored her team’s lone goal in the 22nd minute in a 1-0 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday in Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.

It is the second straight day that the Pandas shut out the Huskies. A day earlier, the score was 5-0.
Black found the net after Elise Emmott sent her the ball on a rush into the Huskies zone. It slipped just out of reach of Huskie keeper Marissa Wilford.

Saskatchewan had an extra jump in their step, playing the visiting Pandas harder than a day earlier. Huskies Jamie LeMay and 2009 Canada West All-Star Daniela Funezalida each just missed the net wide to the right in the first 10 minutes of the match.

The Pandas had 11 shots in the game, while the Huskies took nine including three from Fuenzalida. Wilford and Pandas keeper Keltie Biggs each made three saves in the game.

The pair of wins gave the Pandas a leg up in the standings after the opening week of Canada West women’s soccer. Alberta sits on top of the standings with the Trinity Western University Spartans and UBC Thunderbirds. The Huskies are 0-2 along with University of Calgary Dinos and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
