Game Stats
Keshia Wallin and Heather Lund sparked Alberta’s offence each
scoring a pair of goals in the game. Both of Wallin’s goals
came from free kicks that landed in the top right corner of the net
just out of reach from the Huskie keeper Marissa Wilford.
Wallin opened the scoring on her first free kick just five minutes in. The next three Alberta goals came within eight minutes of each other. Lund netted her first after Amanda Black and Wallin sent the ball her way in the 20th minute. Carleigh Miller made the game 3-0 with a goal in the 24th minute. WINNIPEG - The Canada West conference women’s soccer season
got underway on Saturday, at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex, and
the Bisons soccer team was within three minutes of opening their
season with a win, but couldn’t hold on as Victoria scored
late in the match to end the game with a 1-1 draw.|
Vikes-Bisons
Game Stats
The second half brought more momentum for Victoria, as the wind was
in their favour, and helped their offense move down the field.
Bisons keeper Laura Harrison made a big stop early in the second
half to preserve the Bisons’ lead. It looked as though the
Bisons would pick up a 1-0 win for most of the second half, but in
the 87th minute, Victoria’s Tessa Margetts put one off the
cross bar and into the Bisons net, tying the game at one.
The two teams fought the blustery winds for the first few minutes
of the first half, with a few scoring chances going the Bisons way.
But solid netminding from Victoria keeper Stephanie Parker kept the
match tied at zero. Off a loose ball in the box, fourth-year Bisons
midfielder Meagan Smith notched her first of the Canada West
conference season. The rest of the half had a few more Bisons
chances, but Parker held her ground, keeping the score at 1-0 after
45 minutes of play.

Trinity Western 2 Lethbridge 0
by Eoin Colquhoun, U of lethbridge Sports
Information
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The top-ranked and defending CIS champion Trinity Western Spartans got off on the right foot in their quest to defend their title with a 2-0 win over the host Lethbridge Pronghorns in both teams opening game of the Canada West season.
Spartans-Pronghorns Game
Stats
After an early feeling out period, where the Spartans carried much of the play, the defending champs earned a fortunate bounce to open the scoring. Senior striker Rebecca Ferguson’s cross from deep in the Horns box was deflected by a Horn defender for an own goal in the 19th minute.
Eight minutes later Ferguson was back at it as she was found all alone by Daniela Gerig, Ferguson made no mistake beating Horns keep Ashley Cowan low short side for a 2-0 Trinity Western lead.
Throughout the half the Spartans showed their number one ranking was justified, controlling the tempo and dictating the play. Spartans held a 12-3 shot advantage at half.
While the second half was scoreless and the Horns were far more effective, the Spartans had the better of the chances but substitute Jaleesa Johnston was stellar in between the pipes making 6 saves, including two point blank.
Defender Amy Schweitzer had the Horns best chance in the half but her attempted headed off the line by a Spartan defender.

CALGARY - A valiant effort from the University of
Calgary Dinos on Saturday afternoon went unrewarded as the UBC
Thunderbirds rode a two goal effort from forward Janine Frazao to a
2-0 victory at the West Varsity Pitch in Calgary.
T-Birds-Dinos
Game Stats
Frazao, who scored 10 goals in 2009, twice beat Calgary
goalkeeper Kristen Barton, getting through the Dinos defence midway
through the first and then capitalizing on a Barton miscue in the
waning minutes of the match.
Frazao had a total of five shots in just less than 70 minutes of
total playing time.
Barton had a solid game otherwise, making eight saves against a consistently strong Thunderbird attack in the losing effort.
Morena Ianniello and Lindsay Burrowes led the way for the Dinos with two shots on goal a piece, with Ianniello getting the best chance in the second half. Coming in from the left side, Ianniello just missed a cross with an open net in front of her to keep it 1-0 UBC.
UBC netminder Meghan Best had eight saves in the victory, and five other Birds had a shot on goal each.
The Dinos benefited from an all-around stability not seen last year with veterans such as fullback Caitlin Milne and midfielder Brittany Benson returning to the pitch after a year off.

Regina 2 Fraser Valley 0
by Braden Konschuh, U of Regina Sports Info
REGINA – The University of Regina’s women’s
soccer team opened up the 2010 Canada West schedule with a 2-0
shutout victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday
afternoon at the U of R Field.
Fraser
Valley-Regina Game Stats
Adrianna Bonutti scored both goals for the Cougars, while Michelle
Anderson made five saves – including a few of the spectacular
variety – to secure the shutout.
Bonutti’s first goal came in the 15th minute of the contest. Jayde McFee ended up with the ball at the side of the net after a Tegan Koroluk corner kick, but her shot was saved. Bonutti collected the rebound amidst a swarm of players and drilled it into the top corner after a wild scramble.
The match went into halftime still 1-0 in favour of Regina, and Fraser Valley started to press for the tying strike about 15 minutes into the second half. Ellen Kuyer had an opportunity in tight in the 59th minute after a rebound, but fired wide. Anderson made what might have been the best save of the match in the 63rd minute, diving to her right to stop a Danika Snook shot at full stretch.
Fraser Valley had a few other chances to score, but instead it was the Cougars that found the back of the net. In the 81st minute, Bonutti chipped a long, high cross towards the box from the right side of the pitch. The ball took a generous bounce off the turf, over the head of Cascades keeper Chantelle Biagioni, and into the back of the net to put Regina up by two.
