Burnetts late goal gives Gaiters a 1-1 draw
MONTREAL – A 77th-minute goal by Stephanie Burnett (Durham, Conn.) gave the Bishop's Gaiters a 1-1 tie against the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Soccer League women's action tonight in Montreal.
Burnett's goal, the tenth of her Bishop's career, came on a through ball by rookie forward Taylor Wade (Wolfville, N.S.). Wade fought off two defenders, and found Burnett heading towards the goal, and the third-yea striker beat Concordia goalkeeper Andrea Davidson to the ball, and tucked it into the bottom left corner. The goal capped a strong second half for the Gaiters, in which they outshot Concordia 10-5.
Concordia (0-0-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on a goal by Hannah Lise, as the Gaiters' slow start allowed the Stingers to control the play in the first half.
Concordia outshot the Gaiters 14-10 in the game, with both teams making nine shots on target. Davidson made eight saves for Concordia. For Bishop's, starting goalkeeper Becky Yates (Halifax, N.S.) made one save before being injured in a goalmouth scramble in the fifth minute. She left the game and did not return. Molly Bucholtz (Peterborough, Ont.), playing her first CIS game, made seven saves in relief to earn the tie.
The Gaiters (0-0-1) return to action on Sunday afternoon as they host the McGill Martlets (1-0-0). Kickoff at Coulter Field is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be carried live on SSN Canada at www.gaiters.ca and www.ssncanada.ca .
