Ravens earn first win of regular season

OTTAWA - The Carleton University Ravens women’s soccer team grabbed its first win of the regular season Wednesday night, in a 1-0 victory over the RMC Paladins at Ravens’ Field.

The start of the game saw a lot of back and forth between the Ravens and the Paladins, with neither team being able to create much of a scoring opportunity. The back end of the first picked up when Carleton’s Samantha Nealon (Ottawa) made a strong strike that caught the air and headed over the crossbar.

RMC had trouble with offside calls, making it difficult to get a shot off and leaving little work for Ravens’ keeper, Rachel Bedek (St. Thomas, Ont.).

With five minutes to go in the first, Shayla LaVecchia (Ottawa) took advantage of a free kick, which bounced off the RMC wall and into the feet of Valerie Hamilton (Ottawa) who drove one towards the goal. With Michelle Hamilton (Winnipeg) making a strong save, Amanda Ngwafusi (Ottawa) was able to put the ball in the back of the net before the RMC keeper was able to regroup, giving the Ravens a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.

The second 45 started with a low shot from LaVecchia that was stopped by RMC’s Olivia Clarke (Caledon East, Ont.). RMC brought more pressure in the second, including a cross in front of the Ravens’ net that was cleaned out by the Carleton defence.

Carleton attempted to further its lead, but were unable to finish, and the Ravens came away with the 1-0 win at the whistle.

The women will now prepare to face hometown rival, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. at UofO.
