No. 4 Queen's dumps Carleton 4-0 in season opener

OTTAWA - The Carleton University Ravens women’s soccer team lost its season opener to the Queen’s University Gaels Saturday afternoon at Ravens’ Field.

The game started with most of the play happening in the Ravens’ half with a lot of back and forth between the players. Fifteen minutes into the first, the Ravens defence broke down, allowing Gaels’ midfielder, Riley Filion (Alexandria, Ont.), to lay a cross into Jacqueline Tessier (Winnipeg), who was able to put the ball in the back of the net, giving Queen’s a 1-0 lead.

A solid back four from the Gaels left little room for Carleton to get many shots on net. With seconds to go before the first 45 minute whistle, Amanda Ngwafusi (Ottawa) was able to get off a strong strike towards the net, but it went wide, leaving Queen’s goalie, Elena Corry (Hamilton), little work to do by the end of the half.

It was a quick start in the second, as Jennifer Hutchinson (St. John’s, Nfld.) flew down the field and past the white shirts, who were unable to make the tackle. Hutchinson was able to send the ball into the net just four minutes into the half, putting the Gaels up by two. Andrea Way (Navan, Ont.) made a couple of attempts for the Ravens, including a strong cross that would end up in the Queen’s keepers’ hands.

The Gaels would bank on a free kick three-quarters into the second, as Melissa Jung (Mississauga, Ont.) received the cross and finished the play to bring the lead to 3-0 for Queen’s.

Filion was able to lob the ball from the side and send it soaring past Ravens keeper, Rachel Bedek (St. Thomas, Ont.), increasing her team’s lead to four.

Queen’s would finish the game with the 4-0 win and take the three points to start the season.

The Ravens will now prepare for their next match-up, Sept. 8 against RMC at Ravens’ Field.  Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
