Chris Lewis named Manitoba Bisons head coach

WINNIPEG - Heading into the 2010 CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) season, the Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer program will have a new head coach on the sidelines after inaugural head coach Walt McKee stepped due to medical reasons. Bison Sports is pleased to announce Chris Lewis as the new interim Bison women’s soccer head coach for the upcoming 2010 season.
 
Lewis enthused, “I am really happy and excited about the opportunity to work with the university women's soccer program at Manitoba and look forward to an exciting and successful season ahead in 2010.”
 
Lewis, 45, has an extensive background in soccer throughout his over 20 years experience as a soccer coach and educator. Lewis served as the Technical Director for the Manitoba Soccer Association from 1989-92. At the soccer club level, the Winnipeg native was head coach of the South End United Senior Women’s Soccer Club from 2007-09 and led the team to back-to-back berths into the National Championships (2008, ’09) as Provincial Cup champions. Lewis also coached the Winnipeg Valeo to the women’s league championship in 2002.
 
At the national level, Lewis was part of the Canadian Soccer Association’s Regional Training Centre Manitoba - Program from 2005-07 as a technical coordinator and staff coach. In addition, he was part of the Canadian Soccer Association’s National Training Centre Prairie Program from 2002-03 and 2005-07 as a staff coach.
 
The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 5 A-License Certified coach has also worked at the provincial level in various soccer roles over the years. Lewis was the coach of the Canada Games men’s team in 2005; U-15 boy’s team in 2003; coach of Canada Games women’s team in 1993 plus U-18 girl’s team in 1990 and U-17 boy’s team in 1989.
 
The former Bison student-athlete suited up for the Manitoba Bisons football and track and field from 1984-86. After university, he was part of provincial all-star team at the Western Canada Games in 1987 and in 1988, he was on the Manchester City reserve team (Barclays League Division 2) in England.
 
Lewis possesses a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Manitoba and has an extensive background in strength and conditioning as he was with the National Sport Centre - Manitoba from 1993-2005 as Strength & Conditioning Program Coordinator (2000-01) plus Sport Science Service Provider (1993-2005). He worked at the University of Manitoba as Strength and Conditioning Coach for football and hockey from 2001-03. Lewis has also assisted world-class athletes in training with his client list including: Rhiannon Leier and Michelle Lischinsky (Olympian swimmers); Dominique Bosshart (bronze medal at the Olympics for taekwondo); Scott Kelman (drafted 15th overall in NHL) and Israel “Izzy” Idonije (former Bison who is now a NFL player with the Chicago Bears).
