Exhibition: Trinity Western Spartans defeat NCAA`s Division II Saint Martin’s University Saints

LACEY, Wash. – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team got their first preseason victory today on the backs of a solid team effort. The strong corporate play produced a positive 3-1 score over NCAA Div. II Saint Martin’s University Saints Wednesday afternoon in Lacey, Wash.

“We had a decent preseason performance and we were able to play well as a unit. I’m pleased with the way we started and finished and it was good to get lots of player’s minutes on a warm afternoon,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.

Cloverdale, B.C. forward Nikki Wright opened the scoring after forward Rachel Antoniuk, of Langley, B.C., got behind the Saints defenders. Antoniuk drew the defensive focus and was able to get the ball back to the open Wright who found the open net.

TWU keeper Veronika Rogina, of Surrey, B.C., was solid on the day and made a couple of fine saves in the first half to allow the Spartans to go into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Trinity Western came out a little flat to start the second half and as a result Saint Martin’s was able to get on the scoreboard to tie the match at 1-1 early in the second period.

The tying marker woke up the Spartans who raised their level of play and were rewarded when rookie midfielder Jenna Di Nunzio, of Surrey, B.C. took a pass from Vancouver forward Alicia Tesan and scored her first goal as a Spartan to give the visitors from Langley, B.C. a 2-1 lead.

About two minutes later Alicia Tesan put the Saints sweeper and keeper under pressure, which resulted in an own goal as the Saint Marten’s sweeper tried to clear the ball which ended up in their own net.
