Batra named Acadia Axewomen head coach

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Acadia University is pleased to announce the hiring of Halifax, N.S. native, Amit Batra as the Axewomen soccer team’s fourth head coach since the program’s inception in 1985. Batra will be given the task of returning the team to national prominence, including a 1990 National Championship, six conference

titles and seven visits to the National Championship from 1987 to 2000.

Batra’s coaching career at the collegiate level includes two seasons with the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics women’s soccer program beginning in 2008. While with the Mystics, Batra posted an undefeated 2009 season with 10 wins and two ties.

Named as the 2009 Atlantic College Athletic Association and Canadian College Athletic Association women’s soccer Coach of the Year, Batra’s Mystics captured the 2009 ACAA Championship and earned a spot at the CCAA National Championship.

Over his two season career with Mount Saint Vincent, Batra experienced only one regular season loss in 2008 – his first year as head coach of the Mystics.

Enthusiasm is shared between Acadia and Batra on his appointment to the position of head coach of the Acadia Axewomen. "Acadia has a proud history in women's soccer, including several Atlantic University Sport

titles and a National Championship banner. Many great players have worn the Acadia uniform and the University itself has long been ranked as one of the top academic institutions in Canada. I feel privileged to

have been selected to lead this program into the future.  The team has a strong core of players and we'd like to build on that", points out Amit.

Batra’s coaching at the grass roots is extensive as a holder of a Canadian Soccer Association National B License. As the Technical Director of Dartmouth United for three years from 2005 to 2007, Amit also was the

Halifax East and Halifax West Regional Training Centre Head Coach for Soccer Nova Scotia. In 2005 and 2006, Batra coached the Under 13 and Under 14 Boys Provincial teams.

For nearly 10 years, Amit played in the NSSL Premiership for Forest Hills United under former Acadia men's head coach John Kehoe and for the Dartmouth United Club until 2004.

Director of Varsity Athletics at Acadia University, Brian Heaney is pleased with the renewed direction of the women’s soccer program. “I am delighted to have a coach of Amit’s caliber and character, join our staff.

His success attributes will make a huge contribution to our communities and to the University. We are looking forward to many great seasons under Amit’s leadership”.

The Axewomen open up the regular season on Saturday, September 11 in Halifax against the Dalhousie Tigers and return to Wolfville for their home opener on Friday, September 17 against the Mount Allison Mounties at 5:00 pm.
