2009 AUS women's soccer all-stars announced
HALIFAX, NS - Atlantic University Sport is pleased to announce
the 2009 women's soccer all-star teams as selected by the
conference's head coaches following regular season play.
UPEI fourth year striker Tessa Roche, the 2005 Atlantic conference Rookie of the Year, leads the list of all-star selections announced today. Roche, who led the CIS in scoring in 2005 with 15 goals, scored a league-high 13 goals this season, the second highest total in the nation this season. Other Panthers honoured today include second year keeper Chanelle Roy, third year defender Sara Stewart and second year midfielder Andrea Archibald. Roy and Stewart are all-stars for the first time while Archibald was also a second team selection in 2008.
The first place and CIS No. 5 ranked Dalhousie Tigers, who have yet to lose a game this season, also had four players recognized by the coaches. Fourth year defender Jeanette Huck and fifth year senior Teresa Morrison were named to the first team, while midfielders Kate MacDonald and Rieka Saintilli were named to the second team. Huck, the 2006 AUS Rookie of the Year and a 2008 second team CIS all-Canadian, led the Tigers with seven markers this season, while Morrison added five goals for Dalhousie, who led the conference with 27 goals scored. MacDonald was also a second team selection last season.
Four-time reigning Atlantic University Sport conference champions, the Cape Breton Capers, who finished third in the regular season, had three players named to the first team, including graduating seniors Kiley Snow and Hannah Abenheimer, along with third year defender Alyssa Kavanaugh. Abenheimer, a 2008 first team CIS all-Canadian, netted three goals for the Capers this season while Kavanaugh found the back of the net twice.
Other notable selections include Memorial's Laura Breen and Malorie Harris, who finished the regular season with six and five goals respectively. Breen, a four-time conference all-star who was named the 2004 AUS Rookie of the Year as well as the 2008 AUS Player of the Year, wraps up her stellar five-year career with 39 career goals. Harris, also a fifth year senior, amassed 28 goals in her five years with the Sea-Hawks.
