Exhibition: Martlets and Cardinals scoreless in 'Battle of the Birdies'

MONTREAL - McGill and Plattsburgh State battled to a scoreless draw to open pre-season play and the 58th year of women's soccer on campus at Molson Stadium, Saturday.

The Martlets had a 7-2 margin in shots on net over the Cardinals who are officially known as State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Goalkeeper Shimone Slomowitz, a sophomore from West Vancouver, B.C., was credited with the tie and shutout for McGill.

"We should have done better (than a 0-0 tie) considering our domination," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "But domination does not mean an automatic win and this was a perfect illustration of that."

The Martlets seemed to have trouble executing plays and appeared tired during the game but Mounicot said that was to be expected after a grueling week of practice in excessive heat conditions.

"We lacked a finishing touch and committed some miscues offensively but in general, I saw some positive things for 90 minutes. We were never out of position during the game except on a corner kick in the first half."

Mounicot utilized two different types of rosters during the game, with the first half composed primarily of veterans. The second half featured freshmen and sophomores.

McGill will host the Ryerson Rams in their final home pre-season contest on Monday afternoon (1 pm). Admission is free of charge. Ryerson, which finished with a 5-6-3 record in the Ontario league last year, blanked Concordia 2.0 on Saturday. The Martlets, which were 9-4-1 last year, will then close out their exhibition schedule on the road with non-conference games at Yale (Aug. 26), the Old Four tournament in London (Aug. 29-30) and at Williams College (Sept. 5).
