CIS women's rugby Friday roundup
Queen's 41 Toronto 29 Final
TORONTO - Three tries in the last 10 minutes would be the
difference as the Varsity Blues women’s rugby team fell 41-29
to the Queen’s Gaels on Friday afternoon (Oct. 7) at Varsity
Centre.
With the loss, the Blues end the regular season at 2-3 and in
fourth place in the OUA Russell division.
Down 17-12 at the half, Toronto’s Karla Telidetzki found a
gap and sprinted 60 yards down the field to even the score in the
45th minute.
The two teams then exchanged tries over the next 15 minutes of
action, until the visiting Gaels took control with three unanswered
tries to take control.
Despite a last-minute effort from Toronto, the Blues dropped their
third game of the season.
Telidetzki led the Blues with two tries, while veterans Lee-Anne
Corrigan and Hannah Ehrhardt, as well as sophomore Rozhen Asrani
each added single tries on the day. Emily McNally had two converts
in the loss.
Andrea Wadsworth and Melanie Judges led the Gaels with two tries
apiece in the win.
The Blues will now wait on results from this weekend to determine
their OUA quarter-final matchup. The OUA quarter-final's begin next
week on October 15.

Waterloo 17, Western 12 Final
No. 2 Guelph 106, York 0 Final
No. 9 McGill 15, Ottawa 7 Final
OTTAWA - Despite a strong performance, the Gee-Gees just could
not find their way out on top in tonight’s battle with McGill
and fell 17-5 in their final home game of the season.
In the opening half, the Gee-Gees struggled to contain the
Martlets’ run and McGill opened up to an early 10-0 lead with
two tries in the first 20 minutes. The Gee-Gees had trouble getting
forward motion even with possession of the ball.
But the Gee-Gees regained their step and stood up to McGill, making
it within yards of the goal area in the second half and stopping
McGill countless times on the field. The Gee-Gees only points came
in the last minutes of the game when third-year 2nd row Amel
Hussain (Ottawa, Ont.) breached the goal area to score a try.
After the first ten minutes, head coach Suzanne Chaulk said the
team “woke up and started playing rugby, playing great rugby.
They were more mentally tough, they were more confident in their
ability to problem solve.”
Chaulk also highlighted the performance of the rookies coming off
the bench late in the game. “You can’t ask for more
than [what they gave], they come off the bench and make an impact
the moment they hit the field.” Rookie first-year flyhalf
Jess Mainwood (Ottawa, Ont.) demonstrated this, converting on the
Gee-Gees try for two extra points late in the game.
“I think this game for us was an opportunity for us to show
how we can play as a team and the potential that we have. The rest
of the season, I’m not sure that everyone believed that dream
and bought into it and tonight was the night that we all bought
into it,” said fourth-year prop Esinam Agbeyaka (Oshawa,
Ont.), “We played for each other, we played because we wanted
to play, we played because it’s a sport that we’re in
love with; we’re rugby players.”
As their final home game of the season, the Gee-Gees celebrated the
athletic careers of graduating players Agbeyaka, fifth-year 2nd row
Hayley McKee (Alliston, Ont.) and third-year centre Janine McKay
(Barrie, Ont.).
The Gee-Gees will close the regular season at Laval (4-0
RSEQ) on October 15, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
