Western 22 McMaster 38 Final

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster women's rugby team earned their first win of the season over the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon with a score of 38-22. Marauder Cindy Nelles (Belleville, Ont.) scored 21 points for the home team to win the home opener of the 2011 season.
 
The Marauders took to the field and dominated Western early on. Nelles scored her first try of the match just 10 minutes in to give McMaster the early lead. In the back field, McMaster's Georgia Davis (Frankford, Ont.) would be solid for the Marauders to keep the majority of play in Westerns half.
 
McMaster's second try of the game would come from Lynsay Turner (Mississauga, Ont.) and Nelles would kick the convert to go up 12-0. The Marauders would continue to shut out the Mustangs with Nelles second try of the match and Maggie Cogger-Orr (Thornhill, Ont.) would kick for the extra two points.
 
Just before half, the Mustangs found a way into McMaster back end and would earn the try from MacKenzie Fane but Meaghan Buitinga (London, Ont.) would miss the convert. The Marauders would be up 19-5 going into the second half.
 
In the second, play would even out for both teams but McMaster would strike again. Cogger-Orr would earn the try and Nelles would kick for the convert.
 
As Western began to pick up the pace, Allison Walker (Waterloo, Ont.) would score the try for the Mustangs and Buitinga would earn the convert. Soon after, Western's Arielle Borrice (Toronto) would score anouther try for the Mustangs putting the visitng team within nine points of McMaster's lead.
 
Picking up the pace, the Marauders would score two more tries, from Natasha Turner (Rockcliffe, Ont.) and Nelles, respectively, while Nelles earned another two points off the convert. Western's Borrice would score one last time to end the match, but it wouldn't be enough to defeat the Marauders.
 
The final score of Sunday's game was 38-22. The McMaster women's rugby team takes on the York Lions next Saturday.

No. 10 Acadia 12 No. 1 StFX 60 Final

The CIS top-ranked StFX X-Women rugby team opened the AUS regular season with a 60-12 win over the visiting Acadia Axewomen Sunday afternoon.

More than 700 fans at Oland Stadium in Antigonish, NS watched the home team jump out to an early 15-0 lead on the strength of a field goal and try by full back Magali Harvey. She also added the conversion on a try by winger Amanda Thornborough.

Axewomen scrum-half Amber Davison cut the lead to 15-5 with her first try of the season.

Tyson Beukeboom, the AUS Subway player of the match, responded with her first of two trys in the match. Harvey added the conversion to extend the X-Women’s advantage to 22-5.

With less than two minutes remaining in the opening half, the CIS tenth ranked Axewomen trimmed the lead to 22-12 on a try by center Deidre Rees and conversion from fly-half Erin Beazley.

In the second half, the X-Women outscored the Axewomen 38-0.

Beukeboom and Harvey, both with their second, Jamee George, Sarah Kaljuvee, Emma Taylor and Lisa McGrath scored trys in a dominant second half for the X-Women.

Harvey, who collected 25 points in the match, added four conversions.

With the win, the X-Women are 1-0, while the Axewomen fall to 0-1 in AUS regular season play.

Both teams return to action Sunday, Sept. 18, with St. F.X. visiting Halifax to face the Saint Mary’s Huskies and Acadia hosting the UPEI Panthers in Wolfville.

Both matches will kick-off at 2 p.m.

No. 9 McGill 71 Sherbrooke 0 Final

SHERBROOKE - Brianna Miller of Pte. Claire, Que., scored 26 points and Krista Dunn of New Glascow, N.S., had three tries as the visiting McGill Martlets skunked Sherbrooke 71-0 in their Quebec university women's rugby opener, Saturday.

Miller, a 5-foot-5 physical education sophomore, tallied a pair of tries to go with eight conversions, the second-highest single-game performance in Quebec university history. The conference record for most conversions is 13, set by Sandra Simpson in a 113-0 shellacking of Sherbrooke on Sept. 25, 2005.
 
Senior Mandy Mongeon of Ile-Bizard, Que., and Emily Barber, an 18-year-old freshman from Fenelon Falls, Ont., each added a pair of tries for the Martlets, who led 48-0 at halftime. Rounding out the scoring with one try apiece was junior Chloe Duncan of Ormstown, Que., and sophomore Casey Thornburn of St. John's, Nfld.
 
Sherbrooke (0-1) plays at Laval on Sept. 17, while McGill (1-0) returns to action on Sept. 18 when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
 
MARTLET MURMURS: Sandra Simpson also had eight converts on two other occasions (in a 98-0 rout over Bishop's on Sept. 12, 2005 and in a 98-0 conquest over Sherbrooke, Sept. 17, 2006)

No. 2 Guelph 125 Laurier 0 Final

WATERLOO, Ont. - Wilfrid Laurier women's rugby team hosted their first home game today and suffered a 125-0 loss to the Guelph Gryphons.

The Gryphons were led by Stephanie Tibelius (Ottawa, Ont.) with 15 conversions. Despite the loss, the Golden Hawks never gave up on the field, showing grit and determination.
Come cheer on your Golden Hawks (0-2) at their next home game versus the University of Waterloo (1-0) on September 17th.
