CIS women's rugby Saturday roundup: No. 6 Queen's topples Trent 38-22 in season opener

Saint Mary's 0 UPEI 12 Final

CHARLOTTETOWN - The UPEI Women's Rugby team is far ahead of the last couple seasons with a win today over the Saint Mary's Huskies 12-0 in the first regular season game. The Panthers played host to the Huskies on Saturday afternoon at MacAdam Field.
 
The Panthers were close in the first 10 minutes but unable to drive over the line but looked strong during the entire half. At the 48 minute, fifth year Rebecca Robison scored the try for the Panthers to go up 5-0.  Saint Mary moved the ball down the field well mid way of the half but were unable to score. In the 71st minute, fifth year Jenelle MacKenzie scored her first AUS try after playing the last four years on the UPEI Womens' Hockey team.  Fifth year Bailey Harper made the conversion into the wind and helped the Panthers to a 12-0 lead.
 
First year UPEI player Jill Jeffery was named the Subway Player of the Game.
 
Just before game time the Panthers honoured former Panther Ashley MacDonald with a plaque and banner.

Trent 22 No. 6 Queen's 38 Final

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Queen's Gaels (1-0) started their season off right as they toppled the Trent Excalibur (0-1) in their home opener on Tindall Field by a 38-22 score. First year Gael Bronwyn Corrigan of Waterloo, Ont. finished with six points on three conversions to lead Queen's.
 
Queen's had eight different scorers in the win amassing six trys and four conversions in what was truly a team effort.

Katie Doughty of Peterborough, Ont. led all Excalibur players in scoring with one try and one penalty goal for eight points.

The Gaels' regular season continues as they host Brock (0-1) on Saturday, September 17 on West Campus in Kingston, Ont.

No. 8 Waterloo 15 Brock 5 Final

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's rugby team (0-1 OUA) lost 15-5 to the Waterloo Warriors at home Saturday afternoon.
 
In the 26th minute, Waterloo jumped out to a 7-0 lead when senior Kaley Maksymyk (Preston, Ont.) scored a try and sophomore Megan Colwell (Spencerville, Ont.) kicked the convert.
 
Two minutes into the second half, Brock narrowed the lead to 7-5 when junior Teal Narraway (Stittsville, Ont.) broke through the Waterloo defensive line and scored her first try of the season.
 
Two minutes later, Waterloo was awarded a penalty and Colwell kicked a penalty goal from 20 yards out to give her team a 10-5 lead.
 
In the 51st minute, Waterloo senior Savannah Gentile (Toronto, Ont.) rounded out the scoring when she pounded the ball in for another try.
 
The Badgers next action is Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. when they travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels.
