Laval 10, Ottawa 3 Final

LavalRouge et Or may be ranked number six in the country, but the Gee-Gees made them work hard for their slim 10-3 win.

"I think it was a really big game for us. In the past, when we've seen Laval, it's been a big score in their favour. I think we've really come together as a team this year. And I think we showed them in this game that we can beat them," said fifth year flyhalf Kate Foulds (Toronto, Ont.).

The Gee-Gees held the ball in Laval's end for the beginning of the first half, but were soon on the defensive as the Rouge et Or scored a try 29 minutes in and again 38 minutes into the first half, though both times failing to convert.

The second half saw the Gee-Gees protecting their own zone again for much of the playing time, though showcasing a strong, resilient defence that stopped Laval from putting any points up in the second frame. With seven minutes remaining, Fouldsgave fresh life to the Gee-Gees, putting three points up on the board with a penalty kick. A last minute drive to the Laval goal fell just shy as time ran out.

"We did a great job defensively. But Laval had stolen the momentum and we got into the mindset of just doing defence," commented Head Coach Suzanne Chaulk. "You can't afford to just play defense against a team this good. You have to get the ball in your hands as much as you can. And if you want to win a game, you have to have more [ball control]."

"We were very competitive in the first half. Our nerves got the best of us. I like the way our team is moving. I think we're peaking well. I think we're improving week to week," concluded Chaulk.

The Gee-Gees next action is Thursday, October 7 at 8:00 p.m. when they travel to take on McGill for the second time this season.
