OUA roundup: Playoff seeds set

LONDON, Ont. - The No. 3 nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons (5-0) bid for a perfect season continued on Friday as they defeated the No. 8 Western Mustangs 20-7 in a rematch of last year's OUA championship.

Brittany Benn (Napanee, Ont.) led the way with three tries for a game-high 15 points. Jacey Murphy (Alliston, Ont.) contributed a fourth try for the Gryphons.

Western's points came from a try by Laura Russell (Bolton, Ont.) and a convert by Martha Goodrow (Aurora, Ont.).

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 3-2 record.

MCMASTER 19, TRENT 8

At Trent, Victoria Sawatsky (Cobourg, Ont.), Kimberly Ngai (Markham, Ont.) and Nina Bui (North York, Ont.) all scored tries to lead the No. 6 McMaster Marauders (4-1) to an 19-8 win over the Excalibur (2-3).

Lauren Wizowski scored Trent's lone try. Kristine Boyles teammate added a penalty goal.

Rebecca Delaney (Caledon, Ont.) also scored on two converts for the Marauders.

QUEEN'S 23, BROCK 10


At Queen's, the Gaels improved to 4-1 with a 23-10 victory over the Brock Badgers (1-4).

Andrea Wadsworth (Toronto) scored a game-high 10 points on two tries for the Gaels, while teammate Michelle Gauer (Calgary) contributed a try and convert. Susan Heald (Burlington, Ont.) also scored a try in the victory.

Holly Monkman (Caledon, Ont.) and Misha Maric (Toronto) scored tries for the Badgers.

LAURIER 7, WATERLOO 5


At Wilfrid Laurier, the Golden Hawks won a defensive struggle against their cross-town rival No. 9 Waterloo Warriors (3-2) on Friday to claim their first victory of 2009.

Christine Jennings (Trenton, Ont.) scored a big try for the Golden Hawks (1-4). Michelle Smith's (Toronto) convert proved to be the difference in the game.

Caitlin Martin (Teeswater, Ont.) scored Waterloo's lone try.

OUA PLAYOFFS

The OUA playoff seedings are now set, with the Guelph Gryphons and McMaster Marauders finishing in first place in their respective divisions. Guelph will host one OUA quarter-final against the Brock Badgers, while the Marauders will host the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-4).

In other OUA quarter-finals, the Queen's Gaels will host the Trent Excalibur, while the Waterloo Warriors host the Western Mustangs.

Games are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17. Check official dates and times later in the week on OUA.ca.
