Trent wins bid to host national championships in 2010 and 2011
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS)
announced today that Trent University successfully won the bid to
host the national women's rugby championships in 2010 and 2011.
These events will mark Trent's first time hosting a CIS tournament,
making it also the first time a CIS event has ever ventured into
Peterborough for a national championship.
"This is very good news for Trent as every rugby player in the
region will want to come here, similar to what is happening to us
now with lacrosse players," said Bill Byrick, director of athletics
for Trent University. "It's exciting to see how the combination of
Trent's new sports fields combined with Peterborough's tremendous
ability to run high-calibre tournaments is attracting significant
events like this to our community."
Brian Greer, an athletic recruiter for Trent, echoed these
sentiments. "This is going to be a great opportunity for women
athletes in high school to know they could participate in two
national championships if they come to Trent." Mr. Greer noted that
the Excalibur women's rugby program is on the rise having enjoyed
back-to-back winning seasons in the Ontario University Athletics
league, and the thrill of playing in front of a hometown crowd will
give them a huge boost.
"The quality of all the bids was first rate," said CIS Chief
Executive Officer, Marg McGregor. "We are especially delighted to
have an opportunity to partner with Trent
University to showcase and profile CIS in a part of Canada that has
not hosted a CIS championship in the past. The student-athletes who
participate in these championships in years to come can be assured
of well-planned and well-attended events with the student-athlete
experience being the focus for the hosts."
The championships will take place in early November in 2010 and
2011 and will feature the best women's rugby athletes in Canadian
universities, with a total of six teams representing the Atlantic
provinces, western Canada, Quebec, and Ontario, including
Trent.
