CIS women's hockey Sunday roundup: Panthers shutout Mounties for first ever AUS banner
HALIFAX, N.S. - The UPEI Panthers claimed their first ever AUS women's hockey title with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Mount Allison Mounties in the final of the 2012 Subway AUS women's hockey championship Sunday afternoon at Dalhouise University.
Despite the two out-of-province finalists, it was a full house at the Dalhousie Memorial Arena.
The first goal came at 4:48 when Panthers forward Christina Kelly scored off her own rebound, assisted by Alicia Betts. Mount Allison gained a two-man advantage when the UPEI bench received a penalty for too many players on the ice and, a minute later, Panthers forward Ferran Brown was called for checking. Thanks to some strong goaltending by Kristy Dobson, UPEI managed to kill off both penalties.
After 20 minutes the score was 1-0 for the Panthers.
Less than a minute into the second period, Kelsey O'Donnell took a pass from Jaimelynn Donaldson to give UPEI a two-goal lead.
Mount Allison forward Katelyn Morton led the offensive push to try and recover, but the Panthers were up to the task. At the end of two periods UPEI led in shots (19-15) and on the scoreboard (2-0).
With no penalties called for either side in the third period, it was an even strength battle as the Mounties tried for a comeback.
With time running out, Mount Allison pulled their goaltender in the final minutes of the game. UPEI's Kelly, assisted by Amber Gaudette, scored an empty net goal to put the Panthers up 3-0 and secure the win.
Christina Kelly was named Subway Player of the Game for the Panthers, while Emily van Diepen received the honours for Mount Allison.
