OSHAWA, Ont. – In a playoff type atmosphere at the Campus Ice Centre, the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over the Brock Badgers. The Ridgebacks were 2-0 in conference action this weekend and have jumped into a three-way tie for the final playoff position with Western and Waterloo. All three teams have 18 points and trail Brock by one point for seventh place. UOIT opened up scoring 5:25 into the second period as Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) finished a nice passing play by teammates Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.) and Jennifer Daly (Ajax, Ont.) on the power play. Ten minutes later, Daly scored a power play goal of her own to put the Ridgebacks up 2-0, as Whitby line mates Jill Morillo and Sarah Worthington recorded assists. In the third period, Brock would eventually score a power play marker of their own as Leigh Vanderveen scored her eighth goal of the season to get the Badgers within one. The Badgers would throw everything they had at Ridgebacks goalie Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) in the third period, but the fourth year netminder made 17 stops in the frame to earn her second win of the weekend. Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored an empty net goal to seal the Ridgebacks seventh conference victory. UOIT’s special teams were outstanding on Sunday afternoon. The Ridgebacks fought off nine of ten Brock power plays including three 5-on-3’s. The Ridgebacks power play also scored two goals on seven attempts. Thompson made 29 saves in the win while Oshawa native Chantal Bicket had 28 in the loss for Brock. The Ridgebacks have won four straight games including two non-conference games against AUS opponents. The team will look to extend their winning streak to five games on Sunday, January 15 as they are on the road against York. Game time in Toronto is at 2 p.m. Source: UOIT Sports Info |
