WATERLOO, Ont. - Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., scored two goals and team captain Abby Rainsberry of Petrolia, Ont., had a pair of assists as the No. 2 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (13-0-1) defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues (7-6-1) 4-2 Sunday night at the Waterloo Memorial Recreational Complex.
For Brooker, it is the second consecutive game that last season's OUA rookie goal scoring leader has found the back of the net on multiple occasions after scoring two against Ryerson on Friday night.
Playing in their final game before the 2011 holiday break, the Hawks came flying out of the gates, outshooting Toronto 12-4 and grabbing a 1-0 lead thanks to Brooker's first goal on the night.
Paula Lagamba of Toronto, put the Hawks up by two less than a minute into the second period with her ninth of the season. However, the Varsity Blues would keep themselves in the game as Amanda Fawns of Scarborough, Ont., beat Laurier netminder Erika Thunder of Buffalo Point, Man., to cut the Hawks lead to one.
The purple and gold would not be deterred by the goal as just two minutes later, Brooker fired home her 11th goal of the season to restore the two goal advantage. Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., would score a powerplay goal late in the frame as the Hawks led 4-1 at the end of two.
April Looije of Mississauga, Ont., added a late goal for Toronto in the third to round out the scoring.
Thunder, who faced just 15 shots in the game, made 13 saves in picking up her sixth straight victory. Toronto goalie Kirsta Funke of Regina, Sask., faced 39 shots in between the pipes for the Varsity Blues, making 35 saves.
With the win, Laurier moves two point clear of the Guelph Gryphons for first place in the OUA and hold two games in hand.
Laurier will now break for exams but will be back on the ice during the holiday break as they head to McGill for a four-team tournament with the No. 1 Martlets, No. 3 StFX X-Women and the Manitoba Bisons. The Hawks next OUA action will come on January 6, 2012 when they host the Windsor Lancers at 7:30 p.m.
