CIS women's hockey Wednesday roundup: Poliseno leads Huskies to season-opening victory over Dalhousie
HALIFAX, N.S. - The Saint Mary's Huskies women's hockey team defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 4-3 Wednesday night to kick off their 2011-12 AUS regular season in front of a crowd of over 350 fans at Alumni Arena in Halifax.
Maggie Poliseno (2nd year, Montreal, Que.) scored two goals to pace the Huskies in a see saw battle with their arch rivals that had Alumni Arena jumping with energy for the first time in years.
The win marks the first AUS regular seaosn victory for first-year head coach Chris Larade of Cheticamp, N.S., who replaced Lisa Jordan during the off season.
Huskies fourth year senior Sarah Maynard (Cole Harbour, N.S.) was named the Subway player of the game after scoring the game-winner with a power-play marker high to the glove side that beat Tigers goaltender Isabelle Ouellette (1st year, Fredericton, N.B.) midway through the third period.
Saint Mary's (1-0-0) finished out the game on the penalty kill and held off a spirited Dalhousie offensive attack featuring six skaters in the final minute.
Huskies goaltender Bria Sharkey (1st year, Nanaimo, B.C.) denied fifth-year senior Jocelyn Leblanc (Moncton, N.B.) of the Tigers point blank with four seconds left to preserve the victory.
Miranda Macmillan (4th year, Truro, N.S.), Sarah Robichaud (1st year, Weymouth, N.S.), and Rachel Cox (3rd year, Kelowna, B.C.) each scored for Dalhousie (0-2-0).
Halifax product Lindsay Gray (1st year) scored her first career AUS goal to round out the Huskies attack.
The Huskies will next travel to Antigonish to play the nationally ranked Saint Francis Xavier X-Women. (Visit www.ssncanada.ca for webcast)
