Provost could set CIS records Friday night
OTTAWA (CIS) - Université de Moncton forward
Mariève Provost could set a pair of Canadian Interuniversity
Sport women’s hockey records on Friday night when the Aigles
Bleues visit the St. Thomas Tommies in Fredericton.
The native of Laval, Que., who is playing in her fifth and final
university campaign, goes into the game with 106 goals and 103
assists for 209 points in 99 career regular season matches.
Already the Atlantic conference leader in career goals and points,
Provost is currently tied with former Alberta Panda – and
two-time CIS MVP – Danielle Bourgeois for most goals in CIS
history and needs five more points to break the national mark of
213 held by another former CIS player of the year from Alberta,
Tarin Podloski.
Friday evening’s duel against St. Thomas will be
Provost’s last before she leaves for Erzurum, Turkey, where
she will represent Canada at the 25th Winter Universiade (Jan. 27
– Feb. 6). She will miss four contests while in Turkey and
will have four regular season games left once she returns to the
Aigles Bleues lineup, starting on Feb. 13 against St. Thomas.
Provost is second in CIS scoring this season with 15-19-34 in 15
contests. She trails only Olympic gold medallist Hayley
Wickenheiser who has a record of 16-23-39 in 14 outings with the
Calgary Dinos of the Canada West conference.
A first-team AUS all-star each of her first four campaigns at
Moncton, Provost has earned first-team all-Canadian status on three
occasions. Since being named AUS rookie of-the-year in 2006-07, she
has merited conference MVP honours twice and has won three AUS
scoring titles along with one CIS scoring crown.
Provost helped Canada claim gold at the first-ever Universiade
women’s hockey tournament in 2009 in Harbin, China, when she
racked up seven points (4-3-7) in as many games.
