ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (2-0 OUA) captured their second straight victory as they defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by the score of 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Toronto took a 1-0 lead on the power play just 3:49 into the first period as Marlie McLaughlin setup Brenley Jorgensen for her first of the season.
Six minutes later, the Badgers tied the game 1-1 as junior Kristen Dewsbury (Oshawa, Ont.) setup sophomore Brianne Veale (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) who beat Varsity Blues starter Nicole Kesteris for her first of the campaign.
In the second period, Brock's power play went to work right away as seniors Kelly Walker (Brampton, Ont.) and Karolyn Mcilmoyle (Newmarket, Ont.) setup Emily Hooper (Hamilton, Ont.) for her second goal of the season just eight seconds in. The Badgers added their fifth power play goal in just two games at 8:12 when freshman Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) buried a shot past Kesteris for her first goal of her university career and a 3-1 Brock lead.
The Varsity Blues got one back at 10:53 when Brittany Kirby found an open Emily Milito who beat Brock senior goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) making it 3-2.
The Badgers would regain the two goal lead 4:31 into the third period when Veale and rookie Leigh Vanderveen (NOTL, Ont.) would return the favour setting up Dewsbury for her first goal of the season and the eventual game winner.
With their goalie pulled, Toronto would answer with the extra-attacker just eight seconds left in regulation as Milito registered her second goal of the contest with Lindsay Hill and Callie Bazak adding assists.
Clause recorded her second victory registering a season high 33 saves. Kesteris turned aside 24 shots in the loss.
