Exhibition: X-Women win the Aigles Bleues Hockey Tourney

MONCTON – Saint Francis Xavier University X-Women scored three unanswered goals in the second period and then held on to beat Université de Montréal Carabins 3-2 in the final of the annual Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues pre-season women's hockey tournament played on the weekend at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.

The Aigles Bleues took third position by virtue of a close 2-1 victory over the Saint Thomas University Tommies.

Nicole Hansom led the X-Women offensive with two goals and an assist while Jenna Downey scored the other goal. Marie-Andrée Leclerc-Auger, in the first and Kim Deschênes, in the third, replied for the Carabins. Johannie Thibeault and Mariève Provost scored for the Aigles Bleues and Jordan Miller for the Tommies.

"I am very happy with our results and our third position," Moncton coach Denis Ross said. "I played all the players this weekend to give them the university hockey experience. Le calibre of play at the tournament this year was superior to the last few years."

Saint Mary's Huskies grabbed the 5th position by virtue of a 2-1 win over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers Sunday morning. Courtney Schriver and Kaitlyn Abbass scored for the winners and Jessica Rossenbaum for the losers.

The 7th position was won by the Dalhousie University Tigers following a 1-0 win over the Mount Allison University Mounties. Miranda McMillan scored the only goal of the game and Ashley Boutilier registered the shutout.

In semi-final round on Saturday, the Huskies beat the Mounties 5 to 2. Lauren McCusker scored twice in the game for the winners. The Carabins scored two early first period goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Aigles Bleues and qualify for the championship game. Mariève Provost and Marie-Soleil Blais scored for the Aigles Bleues. The X-Women beat the Tommies 5-1 to also advance to the final. The Panthers won 4-2 against the Tigers. Jenelle MacKenzie scored twice for the Panthers.
