UBC Thunderbirds to host four team pre-season tourney

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team has announced the schedule for a four team pre-season tournament they are hosting from September 24-26 that features the University of Toronto Blues, Carleton Ravens, and Team BC U18.

"This is the first time that UBC has hosted a tournament of this nature. We expect that this will be a good opportunity for us to see our newest recruits in action and to give them an chance to compete at this level prior to our season opener against the CIS national champion Alberta," said UBC head coach Nancy Wilson.

It will be an all-Ontario battle that opens the four team tournament on Friday, September 24. UBC then takes on Team BC to round out the action day one. Day two will see all four teams team take to the ice twice at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in round robin play. Sunday features the championship games with third-place and first-place contests based on the results from the first two days.

"The opportunity to play schools from outside Canada West is very exciting for all of us. Although we're looking forward to seeing how we measure up against these two schools, our main priority is to use this opportunity to build our team and practice our team game," added Wilson.

Last season the T-Birds finished fifth in the Canada West with an 8-15-1 record, missing the playoffs by three points. Toronto finished with a 14-11-2 record in the OUA while Carleton was 8-12-0 playing in the QSSF.

UBC opens their 2010-11 CW regular season in Edmonton against the Pandas on October 15.
