StFX's Downey attending national U22 selection camp
ANTIGONISH, NS – X-Women defense Jenna Downey has been invited to participate in Hockey Canada’s national women’s under-22 team selection camp being held this week in Toronto, ON. Downey, a native of Stratford, ON recently completed her first year with the StFX squad and was named an AUS all-rookie for her performance on the ice this past season.
“This is a great opportunity for Jenna to experience what it takes to play at the next level,” comments X-Women head coach David Synishin. “She has a great work ethic and will only benefit from competing with the best players in the country in that age group.”
Downey tallied 12 points (2 goals, 10 assists) in 24 regular season games for the X-Women this past year, good enough for sixth overall in AUS scoring amongst defense. A tough presence on the ice at six feet tall, she also accumulated 50 penalty minutes and posted a +6 plus/minus rating for StFX.
Downey is the lone X-Women to be invited to the national camp, and is one of only three CIS skaters to be invited, along with Jocelyn LeBlanc (Dalhousie) and Andrea Boras (Alberta). The players were selected to be part of the selection camp based on evaluations done by Hockey Canada regional scouts during the 2009-10 season. Those attending camp are eligible to represent Canada at the 2011 MLP Cup in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland in early January. Hockey Canada will also use the camp to select 22 players for a three-game series against the United States' women's under-22 select team later in August.
More information on the under-22 selection camp, along with the complete camp roster can be found at Hockey Canada.
