Knox shuts out Badgers 3-0, Laurier netminder one shutout away from tying CIS records

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) picked up her tenth shutout of the 2009-10 campaign to lead the No. 2 nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 3-0 victory over the host Brock Badgers. The win clinches first place in the OUA for the Hawks who are now 21-0-0 on the season.

Knox is now one shutout away from tying Charline Labonte's CIS record for career shutouts with 30 and most single season shutouts with 11. Labonte is taking the year off to participate in the Olympics.

Laurier’s Brittany Crago (Stouffville, Ont.) opened the scoring just 3:13 into the first period with a power play marker. The goal would stand up as the game winner. Vanessa Schabkar (Etobicoke, Ont.) notche d her sixth of the season late in the first to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. The purple and gold’s third marker came from Kaley Powers (Kingston, Ont.) who scored her 11th of the season midway through the second. The goal also came on the power play.

The Golden Hawks killed off all ten power play opportunities for the Badgers, while scoring twice in their sixth chances.

Brock’s Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) stopped 31 of 34 shots on net for the loss, while Liz Knox turned aside all 25.

Next up for the Hawks will be the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, January 31st at 2 p.m. in the Gryphon Centre.
