No. 4 Aigles Bleues win two weekend games, defeat No. 5 X-Women in OT again

MONCTON, NB - The battle for first place is intensifying in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey as the No. 4 ranked Moncton Aigles Bleues got a goal from defenseman Geneviève David at 4:49 of the overtime period during a man advantage to beat the No. 5 ranked StFX X-Women 2-1 Sunday in front of 200 spectators at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.

It was the second consecutive overtime win for Moncton over StFX this season. UdeM also skated away with a 3-2 overtime victory on January 10th in Antigonish. Moncton also extended it's unbeaten streak to ten games, dating back to November 13th when the Aigles Bleues lost in a shootout to the St. Thomas Tommies.

The victory, combined with the one on Saturday enabled the Aigles Bleues to move to within two points of the X-Women who are in the top spot in the standings with two games in hand. StFX has 13 wins, 2 losses and 3 OT losses for 29 points while Moncton now stands at 13-2-1 for 27 points. Saint Thomas is now tied in third with Saint Mary's with 18 points each.

The X-Women dominated play and led 31-21 in shots on goal on Sunday. They were especially dangerous in the second stanza as they had a 13-5 advantage on shots. Tyson Beukeboom scored the first goal at 4:49 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead which lasted till 7:06 of the third period when Janie LeBlanc evened the chances during an other man advantage with a shot from in front of the net. Valérie Boisclair and Mariève Provost each had two assists. Katie Harvieux was the loosing goaltender for the X-Women.

"We lived a difficult moment in the second period because we could not do anything right," Moncton coach Denis Ross said after the game. "We stopped being efficient on the ice, missing passes, we were everywhere on the ice and we stopped executing our plays. We did manage to calm the players between periods and the team played much better in the third. The fans saw two very good teams on the ice today, but we were able to take advantage of our scoring situations at the right time. The first period saw very good up and down hockey from both sides. Kathy Desjardins was again very good in front of our net."

Goal scorer and Subway Player of the Game, Geneviève David was all smiles after the game. "We had the man advantage and I got a nice pass and I just shot towards the net and it went in. We never lost hope of winning today, especially when we fell behind 1-0. We knew we could win it because we did it the last time we played them. Kathy (Desjardins) did an excellent job in nets to help us."

Saturday, Mariève Provost scored twice and player of the game Marie-Hélène Plourde added a goal and two assists in the 6-1 victory of the Aigles Bleues over the Dalhousie Tigers.

Goalkeeper Kathy Desjardins made a number of key saves as the Aigles were out-shot 34-27, including a 14-6 deficit in the second stanza. The Aigles exploded for four goals on those six shots.

Kayla Landry, in the first period, Marie-Ève Couture and Janelle Ouellette completed the Moncton scoring. Ashley Boutilier was the losing goaltender being replaced by Emelie Edfors half way in the second period. Fielding Montgomery deprived Desjardins of a shutout scoring at 19:33 of the middle period.

"We played well except in the first period," coach Denis Ross said. "Our fore checking and our control of the middle of the ice helped us a lot. Desjardins, with her key saves, and the play of our forwards mixed with our defense give us the win."

The Aigles have two more games this weekend, hosting University of Prince Edward Island Panthers Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena and traveling to Halifax against the Saint Mary's Huskies on Sunday at 2 p.m.

In brief… Natalie Cormier did not play Sunday because of a concussion suffered on Saturday….the Aigles second goaltender, Shona Thibodeau, got injured in the warm-up and the team had no back-up dressed Sunday…
