OUA roundup: No. 2 Golden Hawks record 17th straight victory
WATERLOO, Ont. - A first period goal by Kaley
Powers (Kingston, Ont.) lifted the No. 2 nationally-ranked
Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 1-0 victory over the visiting
Toronto Varsity Blues.
"This game was typical of the Laurier-Toronto rivalry of the past,"
said Laurier head coach Rick Osborne following the
content. "The second period was a real battle."
The Hawks have now extended their winning streak to 17 games for a
17-0-0 record while the Blues fall to 8-7-2 on the season.
Powers scored the only goal in the contest at 6:33 in the first
period with the assist going to defencemen Fiona
Lester (Peterborough, Ont.).
Neither team was able to capitalize on their man-advantage
opportunities as both went 0-5 on the power play. Going in to this
match-up the Hawks had the best penalty kill in the league, while
the Blues had the worst. Neither team had a full team minute power
play as an infraction was called during each one.
Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) picked up her league
leading eighth shutout of the season by stopping all 21 shots on
net. The Blues netminder Kendyl Valenta (Brampton,
Ont.) turned aside 37 of 38 in the loss.
QUEEN'S 3, BROCK 2, SO
At Brock, the No. 7 Queen's Gaels needed a shootout to down the
host Badgers 3-2 on Sunday.
After the Badgers took a 2-0 lead in the opening period,
Elizabeth Kench scored a pair of goals, including
the game-tying goal with 2:18 remaining in regulation to force
overtime. She then scored the shootout winner for Queen's (13-3-1)
for a new-age hat trick.
Shannon McLeod and Melissa Geary
scored goals for Brock (5-10-3).
YORK 6, WATERLOO 1
At Waterloo, the York Lions scored six unanswered goals to down the
host Warriors 6-1 on Sunday.
Jennifer Petkovics scored two goals for York, with
teammates Courtney Unruh, Katrina
Tollis, Autumn Mills and Chloe
Milano adding single tallies. Unruh had a three-point
effort with two helpers.
Waterloo's Liana Tennant opened the scoring.
The Lions improved to 11-5-1 while the Warriors dropped to
6-9-2.
WINDSOR 3, WESTERN 2, SO
At Windsor, Candace Rapchak scored the shootout
winner to lift the host Lancers to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory
over the Western Mustangs on Saturday.
The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead through two period on the strength of
Aoife Cox and Katie Dillon
goals.
But the Lancers were in the comeback mood in the third period.
Ashley Kirby finally put the Lancers on the
scoreboard 6:42 into the period, which was followed by
Jackie Leavoy's goal that ultimately forced
overtime and set up Rapchak's heroics.
Windsor improved to 6-12-0 while the Mustangs fell to 8-8-2.
LAURIER 5, YORK 1
At Wilfrid Laurier, Candice Styles and
Andrea Ironside scored two goals each as the host
No. 2 Golden Hawks defeated the York Lions 5-1 on Saturday.
The game was closer than the final score indicates, with both of
Ironside's markers coming with the York net empty.
The scoreboard remained at zeros until the second period, when
Laurier's Alicia Martin earned the game's elusive
first goal. Styles added to the lead, before Andrea
Joyce pulled the Lions within one late in the second
period.
Styles struck again early in the third period, followed by
Ironside's empty netters.
QUEEN'S 4, GUELPH 1
At Guelph, in a CIS Top 10 battle, the No. 7 Queen's Gaels earned a
4-1 road victory over the No. 10 Gryphons on Saturday.
Becky Conroy scored a pair of goals for the Gaels,
including a shorthanded marker. Morgan McHaffie
and Elizabeth Kench also contributed to Queen's
offensive attack.
Scoring Guelph's lone goal was Emily Corbett. The
Gryphons fell to 9-6-3.
TORONTO 6, WATERLOO 1
At Waterloo, Karolina Urban scored a pair of goals
to lift the Toronto Varsity Blues to a 6-1 road win over the host
Warriors on Saturday.
Amanda Fawns, Brenley Jorgensen,
Lindsay Hill and Sarah Stephen
also scored for the Varsity Blues, who improved to 8-7-2 with the
win.
Scoring Waterloo's lone goal was Emma
McMillian.
BROCK 2, UOIT 1, OT
At Brock, Shannon McLeod scored the game winner in
overtime to lift the host Badgers to a 2-1 win over the UOIT
Ridgebacks on Saturday.
Kelly Walker put the Badgers on the scoreboard in
the first period with her third goal of the OUA season.
Rikki Palmateer responded for UOIT in the second
period on the power play.
WESTERN 5, WINDSOR 3
At Western, five different players scored to lift the host Mustangs
to a 5-3 win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday.
Chantal Morais, Lindsay Repath,
Aoife Cox, Tawn Rellinger and
Katie Dillon all scored for the Mustangs. Morais
has 10 goals on the OUA season.
Manon Davis, Candace Rapchak and
Kelly Calhoun all scored for Windsor. It was
Davis' 14th goal this season.
