WINNIPEG - The No. 4-ranked University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team shut out the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-0 Saturday at the Max Bell Arena to win their 12th conference game in a row, and their 16th straight over Lethbridge.
Tammy Brade had a hat trick and Stacey Corfield turned away 22 shots for the shut out. The Bisons fired 36 shots at Pronghorns goaltender Kailey McMaster throughout the contest, which helped move the Bisons to 12-2-0 in Canada West, while the Pronghorns fall to 3-9-2.
Bisons head coach Jon Rempel felt the team played a more complete game on Saturday night.
"We made some good adjustments, which I was happy with," he said. "It was more of a complete team effort out there tonight and that's what we were looking for."
Brade finished off her hat trick in the third period on goals assisted by Caitlin MacDonald and Nellie Minshull. The Pronghorns couldn't get one past Corfield in the third despite having a few quality scoring chances.
The Bisons took three straight penalties to start the second period, but the momentum turn of the second period came when the Bisons killed off a five-on-three advantage, and shortly after, Rachele Bosc scored off a rush. The Pronghorns were able to muster 16 shots at Corfield through two periods, but none got by her, as the Bisons headed into the third with a 2-0 lead.
For the first 10 minutes of the first period the Bisons were able to get shots through the Pronghorns' defence, but weren't able to put anything on the scoreboard. That was until shortly after a Pronghorns penalty to Kimberly Ehrhardt, when Brade capitalized on a chance in front of McMaster, putting the Bisons ahead 1-0, and that lead held up for the remaining nine minutes of the period.
The Bisons will travel to Saskatchewan on January 15 and 16 to take on the Huskies, while the Pronghorns have next weekend off, before heading to UBC on January 22 and 23.
