OUA women's hockey roundup: No. 2 Golden Hawks victorious over No. 9 Gryphons
WATERLOO, Ont. - The No. 2 nationally-ranked Wilfrid Laurier
Golden Hawks (11-0-0) outshot the visiting Brock Badgers 38-11
enroute to a 4-0 win at the Waterloo Recreation Complex on
Sunday.
The Badgers (4-8-1) netminder Beth Clause
(Hamilton, Ont.) had an outstanding first period stopping both
first and second chances.
Laurier's Alicia Martin (Etobicoke, Ont.) opened
the scoring at the 6:38 mark in the second period. The Hawks got
the goal with Karolyn McIlmoyle (Newmarket, Ont.)
in the box for interference.
The flood gates finally opened in the third when Kaley
Powers (Kingston, Ont.) fired a puck from the side of the
net and it deflected in off of Clauses' stick. Powers also setup
the next goal, with a nice pass to Kate Psota
(Burlington, Ont.) who deflected the puck into the net.
Abby Rainsberry (Petrolia, Ont.) scored the fourth
goal for Laurier on a screen.
Kristen Kilgallen (Guelph, Ont.) got her first
start for the purple and gold and stopped all 11 shots for her
first shutout. Beth Clause faced 38 and stopped 34.
QUEEN'S 5, WESTERN 1
At Western, on the strength of a four-point game from
Elizabeth Kench (Gananoque, Ont.), the No. 7
Queen's Gaels (9-2-0) defeated the Western Mustangs (4-7-0) by a
score of 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The opening period saw the Gaels jump out to an early 1-0 lead
thanks to Kelsey Thomson's sixth goal of the
season. For the rest of the period, Western would control the flow
of the game and peppered Queen's goalie Mel
Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) with 11 shots. However,
they were unable to beat the Gaels netminder and Queen's took the
lead into the second.
Western would finally breakthrough on a power play five minutes
into the second as Ellie Seedhouse got one past
Dodd-Moher to even things up at one.
Thomson (Martintown, Ont.) would score her second of the game less
than four minutes later to restore the Gaels lead.
From there, Kench would take over the game for Queen's. First, she
notched her fourth of the season on the power play before setting
up Kristin Smith (Toronto) and Morgan
McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) to give Queen's a 5-1 lead.
Smith's and McHaffie's goals came 37 seconds apart late in the
second.
WATERLOO 1, GUELPH 0
At Waterloo, Kahla Stern (Paris, Ont.) made 26
saves and Mandy Harrop (Simcoe, Ont.) scored the
only goal of the game in the second period as the Warriors (3-4-1)
knocked off the No. 9 Guelph Gryphons 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, Waterloo's Harrop scored her second
goal of the year on the power play at 11:12 to put the Warriors on
the board.
In the third, Waterloo's defence shut down Guelph (5-4-0) who could
not solve Waterloo netminder. Stern would make 26 saves earning her
second victory on the season.
WINDSOR 4, UOIT 0
At Windsor, the Lancers (5-7-0) rebounded from a loss to the
Queen's Gaels the day before to shut out the UOIT Ridgebacks
(4-7-0) by a 4-0 score on home ice Sunday afternoon at South
Windsor Arena.
Lindsay Hoogtraten (St. George, Ont.) took
advantage of Windsor's first power play opportunity of the game to
net her first of the game, as the Lancers jumped to a 1-0 just 4:43
into the first period.
The score would remain unchanged until early in the third period
when Manon Davis (Sudbury, Ont.) scored her 10th
of the season on another Lancer power play to give Windsor a 2-0
lead. Four and a half minutes later Stephanie
Hebert (Windsor, Ont.) would add to Windsor's lead with
her third of the year.
Hoogtraten would net her second of the game, and season, with the
Lancers third power play of the game to make the score 4-0.
Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, Ont.) earned her
first shut out of the season, making 22 saves in the win.
LAURIER 3, GUELPH 2
At Wilfrid Laurier, the No. 2 Golden Hawks extended their winning
streak to 10 straight with a 3-2 win over the visiting Guelph
Gryphons.
The No. 9 Gryphons came out hard in the first period and their
tenacious play yielded a goal just past the midway point from
Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga, Ont.). The Hawks
couldn't tie it up until Katherine Shirriff
(Carrying Place, Ont.) made good on a penalty shot early in the
second after getting hauled down driving the net.
Shirriff continued the Hawks scoring six minutes into the third for
her fifth of the 2009-10 campaign. Guelph evened the game with a
goal from Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.), but two
minutes later Kate Psota (Burlington, Ont.) potted
her second of the season to give the Hawks the go-ahead goal.
Guelph netminder Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill,
Ont.) stopped 31 of 34 shots while Laurier's Liz
Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) turned aside 16 of 18.
Neither squad was able to score with the man-advantage as both went
0-for-2.
QUEEN'S 3, WINDSOR 1
At Windsor, led by Becky Conroy's three point
effort, the No. 7 Queen's Gaels defeated the Lancers by a score of
3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The first period was a wild affair as the two teams combined to
score three goals in the first seven and a half minutes of action.
Manon Davis (Sudbury, Ont.) opened the scoring for
the Lancers just 1:18 into the period when she beat Gaels goalie
Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) for her ninth
of the season.
Queen's would respond quickly and tied the game less than two
minutes later when rookie Alana Smith (Aurora,
Ont.) scored her first career OUA goal. Conroy (Pembroke, Ont.),
who assisted on the opening goal, scored her first of the contest
before the game was eight minutes old to put the Gaels in
front.
From there, both Dodd-Moher and Jamie Tessier
(Copper Cliff, Ont.) of Windsor stepped up their play and kept the
score 2-1 after two periods of play.
The Gaels would add an insurance marker early in the third period
as Conroy scored her 11th goal of the season on the power play.
YORK 5, TORONTO 1
At Toronto, the York Lions (6-3-0) maintained their winning streak
on Saturday, handily beating the Varsity Blues (4-4-1) by a score
of 5-1.
Each team took two penalties in the first 12 minutes, but it was
York who capitalized on the two-player power play. Mandy
Cole (Peterborough, Ont.) scored the first goal of the
game off of passes from Courtney Unruh (Fort St.
John, B.C.) and Kelsey Webster (Duncan, B.C.). The
game remained at 1-0 for the Lions going into the first
intermission.
Both teams erupted offensively in the second period as there were
several shots on goal. Again, the Varsity Blues went down a player,
and after only six seconds on the power play, Cole put in her
second goal of the game.
The Varsity Blues pushed back against the Lions, but York's
goalkeeper Sydney McMurter (Orillia, Ont.) stopped
all 20 shots in the period, just a portion of her amazing 48-save
game. As the period came to an end, York put two more goals in
Toronto's net. Amanda McBride (Newmarket, Ont.)
and Autumn Mills (London, Ont.) each added a
marker for the Lions. The Lions went into the second intermission
up a solid 4-0.
Just under five minutes into the third, the Varsity Blues offence
finally clicked and managed to get the puck past McMurter to make
the score 4-1.
York wouldn't let that go unanswered, and within one minute, Unruh
netted a shorthanded goal unassisted, bringing her point total for
the game to a spectacular one goal and three assists.
UOIT 3, WESTERN 2
At Western, the UOIT Ridgebacks picked up two big points in the OUA
standings on Saturday as they defeated the Western Mustangs 3-2 in
London, Ont..
Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) was the hero for
UOIT as she beat Western goalie Lindsey Martin
(London, Ont.) through the five-hole at 10:46 of the third period
to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Ridgebacks to victory.
Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) got the
Ridgebacks off to a great start as she scored the game's first two
goals, giving UOIT a 2-0 lead. Chrissy Tershyn
(Scarborough, Ont.) would pick up two assists on the goals while
Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) and Meggie
McNabb (Parry Sound, Ont.) picked up single assists.
The trio of Morillo, Tereshyn and Worthington has been on fire this
season as all three players are in the top 15 in league
scoring.
WATERLOO 2, BROCK 1
At Brock, the Waterloo Warriors got goals from Sarah
McCorquodale (Embro, Ont.) and Caitlin
Brydges (Ariss, Ont.) as the team won their first game on
the road this season with a 2-1 victory in St. Catharines, Ont.
against the Badgers.
After Brock opened the scoring at 8:10 of the period, Waterloo's
McCorquodale scored her second of the year on the power play to
even the game at 1-1 after one.
After a scoreless second, the Warriors would score the winner
mid-way through the third as Brydges netted her sixth on the season
and the Warriors would hold on for the 2-1 win.
Kahla Stern (Paris, Ont.) made 19 stops on the
night to earn the victory.
